The Royal Castle in Poznan (opposite the Franciscan Church at the top of Przemysl Hill). It was erected in the latter half of the 13th century as a part of the city fortifications when the Piast dynasty Dukes Premislaus I and Boleslaus the Pious set up their settlement on the left bank of the Warta River in 1253. In King Ladislaus I the Elbow-high times, the castle became the Greater Poland Governor-Generals residence. On 29 May 1493, in this castle His Majesty John I Albert, the King of Poland and Lithuanian Grand Duke accepted the Prussians’ fiefdom homage to the Polish crown and oath of allegiance to the Commonwealth from Hans von Tieffen, the Teutonic Knights’ Grand Master.
