We arrived on Long Island four days before Hurricane Irene was expected to make landfall. We had three 70-degree days of golfing (Island's End Country Club is a flat, relatively forgiving course), kayaking, and fresh farm stand produce shopping. Tropical storm Irene rolled in on Sunday, downing many large trees and some power lines in her wake, but that's a rare occurence for the island. Greenport, however, is a self-sufficient village (not dependent on the Long Island Power Association) and had power throughout. We even found a Starbucks!
