Hueso, Emerald reconfirm statements on DeMaio behavior
What exactly was the crime DeMaio committed if he indeed masturbated? You have to assume he did it in a stall, not while standing in front of the mirror at the sink. If so, it rises to the level of poor taste but nothing more. Is the political debate going to remain in the gutter permanently in this town? If you want to defeat DeMaio, use his advocacy of hurtful policies and dubious economic policies, not something gutter-like that cannot be separated from an anti-gay smear.— August 28, 2013 6:47 p.m.
It's curtains for Digiplex Mission Valley
Great "preview" / "triailer" for your headline in the great tradition of movie trailers!! But like so many previews, the full story delivered far less than hinted at@ lol— August 28, 2013 9:58 a.m.
UCSD nation's top school, says magazine
I didn't think there was a bigger crock of sh-t ranking than US News and World Report but this one takes the cake!! The vast majority of professors at UCSD doing cutting-edge research almost never meet undergraduates, let alone teach all academic quarters. And since when is production of PhD students a major factor in excellence for undergraduate teaching? Only in that they end up doing most of the undergraduate teaching! As far as encouraging public service, all that means is that UCSD and similar schools have a bureaucracy to put out brochures, etc. It says nothing about the actual number of graduates who end up going into public service, however self-serving that sector is even defined. As I said, what a crock!— August 26, 2013 9:22 p.m.
Port's fishy business, redux
Well at least the Port returns the phone calls of the Reader and communicates, as opposed to other public agencies in town which try to pretend the Reader doesn't exist. So I'll give the Port a kudo just for that, even though it spends tens of thousands of dollars on frivolous items and activities each year.— May 9, 2013 4:25 p.m.
Grand Jury finds San Diego Unified School District's website too political
What does the school district care about a grand jury report? They'll have their (allegedly understaffed) communications department write a response in the name of the school board and continue to do whatever they want. This isn't the first time, either. The infamous Alan Bersin got flagged by the state fair campaign practices people after he shamelessly used every district communications tool he could get his hands on to promote Proposition MM in 1998, and I believe the district ultimately paid. The district also paid $10,000 to settle a separate suit on the same matter. But they ultimately don't care, whether it's Bersin, Kowba, Lee, or the new wunderkind superintendent who leaps into her new position in June. As for the communications department, I'd like to know how hard it would be for someone to scroll through the obvious places on its website once a week to look for inappropriate information. The idea that some low-level type could OR WOULD place sensitive political information on the website without approval from the superintendent's office is simply nonsense. The top-down management (and punishment) style exists unchanged from the days of Bersin and no employee in his or her right mind, unless they had just won Lotto, would attempt such a thing. Kowba might as well say that the now infamous Scripps Ranch YouTube video could be posted and sit on the website for weeks without anyone knowing. Ridiculous.— May 9, 2013 4:19 p.m.
Murdoch mulls buying LA Times, Chicago Tribune
At this point, that would be a hell of a lot better than Manchester!!— October 20, 2012 7:29 p.m.
Balboa Park shuts down main part of park to the public for private philanthropist Gala
Oh for crying out loud. Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, but not to his or her own facts. Fact: This was a long-planned and long-announced fundraiser by supporters of various Balboa Park museums and had nothing to do with the plan for the Plaza de Panama. Fact: Portions of the park, from the Spreckels Pavilion to the plaza fronting the Museum of Man to other venues, are occasionally closed off for special events and parties. That in no way diminishes the "people" from enjoying Balboa Park. We understand that you obviously did not like the vote of the City Council. But your feeble attempt here to fan the flames with falsehoods and ludicrous claims to "injury' only hold you up to ridicule.— July 17, 2012 9:14 p.m.
Former USD Players, Assistant Coach Indicted for Point Shaving
Gotta love those nicknames! Reminds me of the gangsters in Hawaii, where none would be caught dead, so to speak, without a clever appellation! But seriously, what's with USD? Is the university stinting on scholarship money?— April 11, 2011 3:53 p.m.
Faulconer Wants to Hasten Downtown Projects
Don What exactly is the cognitive dissonance that allows reactionary Republicans, who spout unfettered free enterprise and rail against unemployment insurance, early-childhood funding and similar, to argue so openly--without any sense of hypocrisy--for unabashed corporate welfare handouts? Or is it just the enduring contradiction in America's greatest cultural/historical myth of government-free enterprise; to wit, the willful lack of recognition that nearly all the successful industrial and capitalist efforts through hundreds of years have enjoyed government funding, directly or indirectly? e.g. Erie Canal, transcontinental railroad, Yankee Clipper trans-ocean trading, airplane development (through military contracts), and on and on and on? Either way, I'd like to see these shallow politicians put out of office. G.K. Chesterson (I think) once said (as exact as I can remember) of the talk of violence: I wish never a violent hand against a person, but I at times would enjoy reading his obituary. Here's to many a near-future political obit for these charlatans!— January 28, 2011 8:28 p.m.
California Superstorm Could Cause 5 Times the Damage of Major Quake
Sorry Don but these stories remind me of the never-ending stories about coffee being bad for you. Earthquake, killer storm, auto plunge off cliff, yada yada yada. All that this latest prophesy of a cataclysm will do is embolden the Bible thumpers into fine-tuning their never-ending quest for the date on which it all ends...— January 18, 2011 3:32 p.m.
