Patrick, Interesting article and great photo. One problem: that isn't Mammoth Mtn. It is Convict Lake with Laurel Mtn. in the background. I have backpacked and XC skied all around that area, and it is a wonderful place to visit. Laurel Mtn. is even more amazing without the snow. It is a mixture of granite, basalt, and calcite.
