golden-hill/holler -- Golden Hill Holler
I used to brag about how the Golden Hill Farmers' Market was all produce. When I went on Saturday I was really disappointed to find that the produce vendors are now outnumbered by vendors selling bike accessories, framed photos, jars of imported goods, jewelry, crafts, and the like. What happened?!? Bring back the fruit & veggies!— May 21, 2013 12:31 p.m.
The Rocking Tanuki
Ian, I noticed a sushi place on my way out of Fashion Valley the other day. It's on the ground level, in the middle of the mall, by the north parking garage. Love Boat, I think it's called? Didn't even know there was a restaurant there! True Food Kitchen's gonna get my business every time I'm at Fashion Valley, but I'm still kind of curious about the Love Boat. Been there/heard anything?— March 29, 2013 10:38 a.m.
south-park/holler -- South Park Holler
Haven't heard the owl, but this reminds me that I haven't heard that rooster over on Felton Street in awhile. I mentioned it to my neighbor, and he told me that they sent a petition around asking the owner to get rid of it. So sad. I loved that rooster!— March 3, 2013 11 a.m.
Still Life with Dad
Ask and you shall receive! A cover story of Matthew Alice columns ran back in 2007: http://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2007/jul/12/...— March 1, 2013 10:40 a.m.
south-park/holler -- South Park Holler
Was over by Golden Hill Elementary the other day and noticed a house for sale for $900,000. It's listed by Sothebys! Guess real estate in South Park is making a comeback? http://www.sothebysrealty.com/eng/sales/92102-s...— February 24, 2013 10:02 a.m.
Yes Virginia, there is a Bali Ha'i, but...
Just watched *South Pacific* on TV a few weeks ago. Was really struck by the racial themes - it's actually kind of heavy! My favorite part was when Lieutenant Cable sings "You've Got To Be Carefully Taught." Growing up in all-white — and dare I say, racist — community in Iowa, I could really relate. Can't help myself from pasting the lyrics here: *You've got to be taught To hate and fear / You've got to be taught From year to year / It's got to be drummed In your dear little ear / You've got to be carefully taught.* *You've got to be taught to be afraid /Of people whose eyes are oddly made / And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade / You've got to be carefully taught.* *You've got to be taught before it's too late / Before you are six or seven or eight /To hate all the people your relatives hate / You've got to be carefully taught!*— February 14, 2013 6:54 p.m.
Accountant faces discipline for DUIs, cocaine
"pleaded guilty" always reads/sounds weird to me, even though I know it's considered correct. It's like someone saying they "readed a book." Oh, English!— February 3, 2013 3:52 p.m.
Skating by the Sea
I mean to do this every year... Somehow hasn't happened yet.— January 3, 2013 6:43 p.m.
Hillcrest’s Pernicano's and Casa di Baffi Restaurants... "Abandoned"?
I couldn't agree more, Ian. It's my favorite part of Hillcrest.— October 3, 2012 8:27 a.m.
Jack White, Steady as He Goes
I distinctly remember Jack saying he would never play White Stripes songs without Meg when they announced their breakup. Change of heart?— August 22, 2012 7:40 p.m.
