Smashburger Hillcrest (Or Anywhere, Really)
If you like old-fashioned hamburgers at old-fashioned prices the place to go is Charley's in Lemon Grove. A cheese burger, fries, soda and a shake was $7.74. The place is nothing to look at and there is no inside seating but their hamburgers beat Smash Burgers by a mile. Charley's Famous Hamburgers 8213 Broadway (between Lemon Grove Way & Milton Rd) Lemon Grove, CA 91945— March 6, 2012 7:58 p.m.
Junkyard Creatures
Children are like dogs in several significant ways, number one they can sense your emotions and will act accordingly, any weird but non-threatening behavior will draw their attention. Number two they feel safest when an adult(pack leader) is in charge. Next time you are faced with this situation, pretend that the children are a benign pack of dogs. Be firm, make eye contact and pretend that by simply being an adult you are in charge. A pleasant, firm statement such as,"Hey watch out for pants"! should do the trick. In today's social climate I would not suggest ever putting your hands on an unfamiliar child except in an extreme emergency.— February 27, 2012 4:33 p.m.
Aladdin Mediterranean Restaurant
They have the best Chicken Souvlaki ever. The garlic sauce on the souvlaki is to die for. I also like to order a side of mixed pickles.— February 21, 2012 7:36 p.m.
Follow the Talent
The changes start in utero. At about 14 weeks gestation if the fetus is male testosterone is released and actually changes the brain structure of the fetus. So almost from the very beginning the female brain is different from the male brain. Of course there are individual differences and experience plays a part especially socialization, but it is quite amazing how our gender influences our behavior.— February 15, 2012 7:34 p.m.
Kiko's Place
For me Kiko's serves comfort food that is both good for you health wise and cost effective. I dislike chain restaurants and seek out small mom and pop places. I like places that actually cook their food from scratch. Hard to find at cheap prices.Have any of you tried Homestyle Hawaiian in Linda Vista? They have good food at cheap prices. Even though I haven't tried it, they have a pretty good rib- eye steak deal. My husband is a big guy and likes his meat and potatoes. Steak on the menu is a good way to get him through the door. Homestyle Hawaiian 7524 Mesa College Drive San Diego, CA 92111— February 11, 2012 6:05 p.m.
Kiko's Place
I'm glad that you found the food to your liking. I want to add a couple of comments. You forgot to mention that they give every customer a small cup of soup. The soup enables me to have the patience to wait for the food. When I had the garlic taco's the fish was moist and not crumbly, the quality may wary on the type of fish used or by who is doing the cooking. I want to try the octopus taco next time. And about taking ATM card, they can only accept cards when their son is there with his cell phone. I've noticed other small business using an app to run debt/credit purchases. Maybe if they get enough business they will be able to afford a phone that stays with the truck.— February 10, 2012 7:50 p.m.
Fish Rolled Tacos at Los Panchos
I've had the same experience when I eat here. I guess it simply depends on who is in the kitchen at the time. Have you tried the new Mexican seafood truck at 30th and Meade ave. My new obsession is their garlic fish tacos. No seating though, take it go or eat in your car. They don't serve beverages, because of the deal that they have with the liquor store for use of the parking lot.— February 5, 2012 8:33 a.m.
When a Problem Comes Along, Demi Moore Must Whip-It
I am 53 mother of three and when I suggested to my 24-year-old daughter that we go out and party together using whip-its, she just laughed at me! Maybe I should have suggested using Sudafed instead.— January 28, 2012 9:43 p.m.
Uninspired in Clairemont: Kitchen 4140
Thank you for furthering my culinary education. I have one more question, doesn't the crust taste burnt? I see blackened dishes offered frequently in restaurants but this seems to be a technique that requires skill and practice. It is not something I would be comfortable trying at home without being schooled in person to the proper technique.— January 12, 2012 10:53 a.m.
Uninspired in Clairemont: Kitchen 4140
This is a serious as opposed to snarky question,if blackened food is not supposed to be charred then what is it supposed to be? I never order anything listed as "blackened" in restaurants because I always associated it with being burnt and the idea never seemed to make much sense taste wise. If you could explain what "blackened" is supposed to be I would appreciate it very much.— January 9, 2012 7:56 p.m.
