Digiplex agrees to purchase 5 local UltraStar Cinemas
For the record, I'm not sure that Poway's screens have fixed aspect ratios. But it was built by Edwards at right around the same time they built the Del Mar 8, which did have fixed 2.0:1 screens. Secondly, here's a DigiPlex back East... http://www.cinematour.com/tour/us/7252.html ... Doesn't look to me like there will be any bowling alleys or paintball guns, that's for sure.— December 12, 2012 3:28 p.m.
3D TV? Someone tell Ralph Kramden the wait is over
Now that I've returned the thing, I think I'm pretty much over the concept. It doesn't suffer from the same brightness issues as the theater because you can crank the backlight up, but I can't imagine watching much in the format. Major downside is, now I have a 3-D Blu-Ray copy of "Men in Black 3" I can't watch. Or is that an upside?— November 30, 2012 2:34 p.m.
Head Explodes in #4 Clairemont Town Square
Another great thing about the soon-to-open ArcLight nearby: no pre-show, only 2-3 trailers.— October 8, 2012 10:37 a.m.
Huge movie poster sale at Landmark La Jolla Village Cinemas in a month or so!
THIS weekend? It's August, not September.— August 31, 2012 1:33 p.m.
Cronenberg's Capsized Cosmopolis Key Art
My point being: It's receiving a miniature release compared to his last three.— August 14, 2012 3:52 p.m.
Cronenberg's Capsized Cosmopolis Key Art
Got some news for ya: This is not opening wide, nor is it a crossover picture (though I assume you were suggesting he already made the crossover).— August 14, 2012 11:32 a.m.
San Diego Film Festival to Host Gus Van Sant Retrospective
I DID go to the movies at SDFF -- 46 of them over the years, to be exact, because I am a masochist -- and I can confirm that the vast majority of titles were brutal. Opening night, closing night, and the prime shows on Saturday--always the most commercial movies in the festival--were often the only good ones. And as Scott asserted, these would all open theatrically soon thereafter. In fact, I just investigated, and over five separate years of attendance, I saw ONE good movie at SDFF that didn't ever receive a proper San Diego release ("Inside the Circle"). Sure, it can be tough to book a smaller-market fest, but they could have at least peppered things up with easily licensed repertory screenings, like this van Sant retrospective. But hey, I'm really optimistic that things will turn around this year, too. God willing...— June 14, 2012 5:45 p.m.
San Diego Film Festival to Host Gus Van Sant Retrospective
Forget about the "Psycho" remake. Will it include "Restless"?— June 14, 2012 11:47 a.m.
Why Cinepolis and the La Paloma Didn't Make the Cut
Only if it's Flat. (Unless the new digital projector is configured to play 'Scope shows with a "letterboxed"-type effect. Hopefully Mr. Largent responds above.)— June 1, 2012 8:16 p.m.
Why Cinepolis and the La Paloma Didn't Make the Cut
I apologize for saying it was mono, Mr. Largent -- I was just expressing how it sounded to me the last time through Projector 1, garbled and borderline unlistenable. It was a bad use of hyperbole on my part -- I didn't think there was a single theater in the country that actually ran mono, and I assumed (perhaps stupidly) that others knew that too. The main reason I do not to the LaP every week is the cropping issue for 'Scope. With the new digital projector, are you showing 2.35 movies with "black bars" on the top and bottom to eliminate cropping? If so, why not book everything DCP? What type of digital projector did you buy? Also: Any chance of repertory shows in the DCP format?— June 1, 2012 8:15 p.m.
