Hi Fishinwithagun, perhaps "saving" them is the wrong word. Respecting them is probably more appropriate. When a pup wants to come in to rest and people are purposely scaring them back into the water, that's just not nice. Totally understand that divers like this spot, but shared use hasn't worked very well. For example, when the ropes were up there were "pro beach access" people who would purposely set up beach chairs and umbrellas right smack in the middle of the seals. Seriously, what was the purpose? If they respected the seals, they could have easily set up a few yards away. Anyway, I'm not a seal activist. I got involved when an anti-seal guy got in my face and was yelling at me when he overheard me talking to my daughter about how cool it was that we have seals on the beach. When he accused me of not being a local and suggested that locals don't want the seals, well, that struck a chord with me - I AM Local Wally afterall. I've been writing my Local Wally guide (www.localwally.com) since 1996, one of the very first websites on San Diego, and the seals not only ARE loved by the locals but are one of the top tourist attractions in the city. So fishwithagun, while I disagree with your views I do respect that you have a right to express them. Only time will tell if the seals get the sand back or if Casa Beach turns into just another beach.— July 17, 2011 8:45 a.m.

Hey Andyman, thanks for the comment. I honestly don't get this issue. San Diego has tons of beaches but only one stretch where the seals and their pups hang out. If the anti-seal people win, what do we tell our kids when they ask why the seals are gone and replaced with beach chairs and bbq's?— July 16, 2011 1:46 p.m.

Thanks - and here's a seal news update! Good news: Judge sends seal rope matter back to Planning Commission. Judge Lisa Foster said that the Planning Commission had a Grand Canyon sized gap in its analysis when rejecting the City Council's resolution to keep the rope up year round at the seal beach. The Planning Commission needs to address this gap in their reasoning and comply with the law. The judge also said there was other procedural confusion that needs to be clarified as to why the Planning Commission’s decision denying the year-round barrier is not appealable to the California Coastal Commission.— July 16, 2011 1:09 p.m.
