Widow of Steve Jobs Gives $25,000 to Tax Measure Also Backed by Wealthy San Diego Donors
Laurene Powell Jobs was savy to make a big donation to Yes on Prop 29. Even if a donor only cared about the financial aspects of the proposition's impact, it would make sense to support it. Although the current Calif. tax (low compared to other state tobacco tax) is a mere 87 cents a pack, Californians pay about $15 a pack in healthcare/lost productivity costs per pack. Since many smokers are low-income, much of this cost is borne by US, the taxpayers! Although Prop 29 is just a USER tax paid ONLY by those buying tobacco, it will bring down the total, long-term cost of Calif. healthcare about $5.1 billion, meaning that it will save all taxpayers money! It really makes no sense that the taxpayer associations are against it! Now let's talk about human lives saved. Certainly, the cancer (and other disease-related) research funded by this great proposition will have a life-saving effect on all of our families. Laurene Jobs just lost her husband to pancreatic cancer, and the new research could unlock clues that will save lives from ALL cancers, including pancreatic. Some families are more genetically-prone to certain cancers, so the promise of cancer research is desirable for the Jobs family--how about yours? In the states where the tax on cigarettes has gone up, many smokers have quit, and fewer teens have become addicted to tobacco. It is estimated that this California proposition will save the lives of over 100,000 current adult smokers and 596,000 current kids from pre-mature smoking-related deaths. Thanks for caring, Mrs. Jobs! Let's all ignore Big Tobacco's lies and Vote YES on Prop 29!— May 23, 2012 2:44 p.m.
