Our Lady of Peace Bullies City Council
The Behi community and the North Park Planning Committee have been wonderful in forging great relationships despite the bullying of OLP. North Park is becoming a stronger and stronger community every day and that has been bolstered by OLPs tactics. We really want to thank councilmembers Gloria, Lightner, Alvarez, and Emerald--these folks consistently support the community against long odds. I think that most of these councilmembers are part of the Catholic Community and will face blow-back of pressure--that takes courage that we don't often see in politics. But the fabulous four understand constitutional separations of church and state and they listen to the community and research the issues. None of these councilmembers are running for mayor. Two of the republican members who voted in effect to support OLP have either announced or will announce their candidacy. Also, the lame excuse by Zapt, DeMaio, Falconer, and Young of saving the city from future litigation costs is "felony stupid". There will be litigation whether it is advanced by OLP or the Behi/Preservation Community and this will render litigation cost neutral. I urge the City Council to stick to it's convictions that advance community good and not the those of special, including political, interests.— April 20, 2011 10:48 p.m.
All in Favor of Balboa Park Preservation...
Hi all, I am a member of the North Park Planning Committee and also a Board member of SOHO. I am so impressed by the way the North Park Planning Committee explores the issues from many perspectives and in a very inclusionary way. We as a community want to preserve the iconic Cabrillo Bridge and have a serious discussion of alternatives to remove parking from the interior corridors and make the Plaza a lively place that honors our historical past as well as reduce or eliminate non-essential traffic through the park. So far, a serious discussion of alternatives has not taken place because so many institutions and communities believe that Irwin Jacobs will take his money off the table and will penalize people and groups that oppose his plan. This is not good governance. The Bankers Hill/Park West group did not have an inclusionary meeting, rather there were hand-picked representatives. The group did not even discuss alternatives. They seem to be largely concerned with parking in their area. If there is only paid parking in Balboa Park as the Jacobs plan proposes, then the Bankers Hill/Park West communities will experience even more people fighting for free parking in their communities. Their approach in counter-intuitive to logic.— February 16, 2011 3:25 p.m.
Hillcrest developers want their own little slice of suburban heaven
I agree completely with opassons (#4) whose new Park2Park shuttle is offering one creative solution to help solve parking issues. I don't want more parking structures on our very limited available land. Don't want to pave paradise to put up a parking lot. Don't want residential parking permits -- we afterall choose to live in open non-gated communities for a reason. I do want responsible business owners and most of ours in North Park really try. I support private security and more street policing (when our cash-strapped city can afford it). I do support substantially increased business fees for all establishments serving booze with seating capacities of +75 to pay for security and I do support hefty fines levied on businesses who serve alcohol to obviously intoxicated patrons.— May 27, 2010 8:31 p.m.
North What?
North Park's Parking Structure is inexpensive to use and it is safe, yet it continues to be poorly utilized. Nope, I don't want to pave paradise to put up a parking lot (or structure). I want parks and gardens that are viewable by pedestrians and used by residents.— May 27, 2010 8:10 p.m.
