Botanical Garden — heck, Balboa Park itself— in desperate need

I think this is what is called "creeping privatization." Take the Prado restaurant; a very nice eatery for the hoity-toity, but most San Diegans who come to the park can't afford it. At the time of its opening, it was explained as a good "income generator" for the park. No one mentioned the loss of a driving lane and parking spaces for the valet service. Then we saw the Museum of Art convert part of the sculpture garden into Panama 66. Another nice place to grab a bite and quaff a pint. A little pricey, but at least there was no major loss of public space. Now, we're going to have ballroom dancing, a gift shop, and a bar inside the Botanical Building? Just to get some lathes replaced? Why does every repair job necessitate a giveaway to private interests? How about all that money that was blown on a whole lot o'nothing for that centennial? Is any of that left? The Botanical Building is one of the most impressive displays of plants, flowers, and trees found anywhere in the county--and it changes with the seasons! Plus, it is one of the few attractions in the park that is still free. Even the so-called San Diego Botanical Garden (formerly Quail Botanical Gardens) up in Encinitas doesn't compare. It would be an irreplaceable loss and a waste of resources to convert this amazing building into anything other than what it currently is; the best damn thing in the whole damn park! Some people just don't know when to count their blessings and leave well enough alone.

Where are the cops when you need them in Ocean Beach?

I think it's terrible that the people in OB who are calling the police are being ignored. But I think they are forgetting a very important rule when it comes to law enforcement. You cannot just call and say, "There's a guy outside acting crazy and threatening to kill me!" They're not going to come for that. You have to call and say, "There's a guy outside acting crazy and threatening to kill me, and I can't be 100% sure in this light, but it looks like he's a black guy." You'll have six cop cars in five minutes with a swat team on hold. There's nothing wrong with law enforcement; you just have to know the rules.

Navy commander gets 78 months in prison

Cuda, Shouda. This guy is charged for giving out inside information to an outfit that provides, tugboats, fuel, and trash removal? I can understand how that would be considered dirty pool for getting a jump on the competition, but these are defense-related contractors--what else is new? You would be hard pressed to find a defense contractor who hasn't gotten the job as a result of an inside connections, old boys network, and what have you. 78 months for being first in line to take out the garbage? Unreal.

Mission Hills/Hillcrest Library project may start this year

When I first saw this headline I thought it was a Walter Mencken article. Am I actually going top see this new library in my lifetime? I thought sure this project had been put on the back burner of the back of the truck at the back of the backed up traffic in Mission Valley during a rush hour when an accident has occurred. In other words, faggetaboudit! I was sure this new branch would not be built before..say, all the ice in the polar ice caps has melted. Only time will tell. Seems too good to be true.

Chargers' political tab already approaching $900,000

The fraud is becoming too much to ignore. It's become undeniably obvious that when it comes to our politics, money is the only thing that matters. It's showing on the national stage with Bernie Sanders pointing to Wall Street's sweetheart, Hillary Clinton, and her big bags of money that she will happily repay when she gets to the White House. And it's front and center here in San Diego with this nonsense about stadiums and convention centers taking precedence over issues like infrastructure, schools, transportation, and homelessness. The political system here has become such an utter failure, it's a wonder a revolution hasn't already taken place. I have to wonder where the failure took place when I see billionaires and millionaires conning working people into doing their bidding and voting against their own interests. I guess we've arrived at a point where there seems to be no stopping stupid. Something needs to change.

Apartment tenant action in Linda Vista

Don't move. And don't listen to the racist who would like you to believe this is all your fault. I'm sure you wouldn't have roaches if you spoke better English. Duh? Work with the lawyer and get your fellow tenants to join you. The landlord has no problem understanding your language, whatever it might be, when you hold out the rent check. These slumlords ought to be put in prison for some of the conditions they allow to exist at their properties. Takes forever to get rid of the rats, but that rent increase--youbetcha--that goes through lickety split! Don't let these greedy lowlifes get away with it. And ignore those who scream it is all the foreigners fault, We'd be better off if we had more of you and less of them.
