Barrio Logan: Sushi secret’s out!
This must be the best open secret in town. But it's all the cooler for that. What I like is they're prepared to spend time helping you learn about what da heck it is you're eating. I thought I'd never break into this whole culture. Now I really do want to know.— May 16, 2013 10:27 p.m.
Turf Club happy hour: First, learn how to grill
You're so right, Vournsdsu. Maybe it's because you have to work for your supper, it tastes that much greater by the time you actually get your molars into the meat.— May 13, 2013 5:04 p.m.
Otay Mesa: Where the bus drivers eat
Thanks Founder. I've always found, buses are a great way of getting me out of the box, the comfort zone. And you get rewards like this! And you're right, Carolann: we should be sending Eduardo's photo direct to Hollywood! And hope he remembers us when he's the next Antonio Banderas. Uh oh. Jes' caught Carla staring at his pic onscreen again...— May 11, 2013 2:58 p.m.
Downtown: Night at the Opera (okay, outside)
Amoril: You're welcome. And yes the choc is terrific, with the little dried flower garden on top. So great people like Beatriz have the guts to start up something like this. And I'm desperate to find out more about Red Oven's crazy "Have oven, will travel" idea too.— May 1, 2013 6:08 p.m.
Strange drinking at D'O Thai
I'm no expert in Thai likker, except for some terrible memories linked to Mekhong whiskey. (Which I kept coming back to just because it was so...Thai. And I pretty much love anything Thai.) Best thing to cleanse it out has always been a searingly-spicy-hot hotpot (as with your Tom Kha) of Tom Yam Kung, the lemongrassy soup (no coconut milk) with shrimp and peppers galore. It's the pleasure of pain, and you come out (if they really give it heat) reborn a fire breathing dragon. Talking of fire breathing, not sure what Vampire's beef is here.— April 18, 2013 8:17 p.m.
La Fachada Logan Heights: Gordita vs. mulita
MsSheree: Belated thanks. So glad you went. I've got to try that posole! But apart from the food, I just like the people there. Great in the evening too. -Ed— April 18, 2013 2 a.m.
Grub of the gods at 94th Aero Squadron
Hey Ken: They keep the place so much better than some places you see with a few artifacts but, like, half-hearted, just a gimmick. I just love the atmosphere. Specially the ducks. Man, how I'd love to have my own plane and fly in for Sunday brunch. Meanwhile how can you beat the HH buffet, free?— April 18, 2013 1:47 a.m.
Santa Fe Depot: Rush job
Well I was heading for the Far North, Oceanside, but really, the train is my true love (Carla, tried to find a way to tell you...kidding!). Something about the rhythm, the world flashing by, breaking out...— April 17, 2013 3:56 p.m.
Santa Fe Depot: Rush job
And it did 't even taste half bad. For me, half the thing about eating is like Einstein: it's all relative to where, how, who you're with, even if it's just yourself taking a moment off from da human race.— April 10, 2013 6 p.m.
Tilted Kilt: Go for the beans!
Sorry Visduh. I guess I didn't do the kitchen justice. As you say, it's all about the scene there. And for me, the scene is as important as the actual food on your plate. Still, maybe I need to go back and eat a little harder.— April 9, 2013 11:45 p.m.
