Thor Minimalist Movie Poster: Who Did It Better?
The Williams looks like something my 7-year-old could have drawn overlayed over a blue-filtered photo of a cracked sidewalk. Plus, the hammer looks like an attribution bubble, or whatever the hell they're called, from a comic book. I kept thinking the text somehow didn't make it through cyberspace. Olly Moss's is better, but still... the hammer isn't hammer-ish enough. It could be a picket sign at a Wisconsin pro-union demonstration. The style of the artwork looks borrowed, too. The Kill Bill 2 poster only makes sense post facto, as you say. And again, it's all so borrowed looking. Footprints? Red on black? That's all you've got Ibrahim? I'm starting to think this kind of graphic design is a field for those who admire art but aren't original enough to be artists.— May 9, 2011 2:43 p.m.
Adoramus
I place Palestrina among the top 5 composers of all time. His Sicut Cervus is a masterwork rivaling any.— May 4, 2011 2:07 p.m.
Other People’s Children
Kevin and Railsplitter, you both have helped restore my faith in humanity. I have a bunch of kids who are well-behaved but, nonetheless, still kids. I've never had anyone like Purple Face or Grumpy Borders Guy say anything, but I've felt the hostility and gotten some looks before. It's good to know that there are people out there who don't mind, and in fact enjoy, the sight and sound of kids being kids. Thanks.— May 2, 2011 4:57 p.m.
Organ Symphony
There's more French music in Babe. The three mice sing a bit from the Toreador Chorus of Bizet's Carmen, remember?— April 6, 2011 1:04 p.m.
I Think I'm Losing
"When I rejected God, I rejected the idea of the soul." Curious, Ms. Luzzaro, that you would reject the soul when soul is the very thing that drew you to your friend Glory and your friends Buck and Betty. Their vivacity, which drew you to them, was not the product of their physical ingredients. We're all basically the same physical matter, but while most people live dull lives in front of the TV, Buck and Betty and Glory shone from within with something beyond the physical realm. It's curious to me to that you, who were so drawn to them, did not see it for the non-physical life force -- i.e. soul -- that it was.— March 23, 2011 2:23 p.m.
Dad works in Hollywood – I was a Ninja Turtles baby
Cute story, Hayley. Plenty of name-dropping, of course, but it was done in light, pleasant style. Brava.— March 23, 2011 2:01 p.m.
Kleiber Enigma
The middle movement of the 7th transcends the rest of the work. For me it's a top ten (top five?) piece.— March 17, 2011 8:51 a.m.
Carmen Kills Herself
Carmen, along with Aida and La Boheme, is one of the three most popular, most loved operas of all time. I'm not entirely sure why. There's nobody to like in Carmen. Don Jose, as Garrett points out, is a disaster. He's moody -- and not in an artistic, fits-of-brilliance kind of way. He's a whiny, obsessive Mama's boy. Carmen's a tease and, let's be honest, a slut. Micaela is officious and manipulative, and what does she see in that disaster Don Jose? Escamillo is a one-note character. It's like watching the Dodgers vs. the Giants or the Broncos vs. the Raiders. You want them all to lose. Musically, there are some fun pieces -- Carmen's Habanera, Escamillo's Toreador song. But Don Jose's Flower Song and Micaela's aria, though pretty, are not terribly exciting. The chorus parts are not better than standard fare. I don't quite get the Carmen craze. Maybe it boils down to sex sells.— March 9, 2011 12:19 p.m.
Recital Season
Is it me, or does this photo of Alexandra look like Megan Fox in the creepy horror movie Jennifer's Body? It's like she's trying to bite me.— March 3, 2011 11:20 a.m.
A School Principal’s Reflections on Race
Congratulations to Mr. Murchison. The world, the country, San Diego, and the black community need more men like you.— January 19, 2011 12:07 p.m.
