Straight up
Procreation is a product of marriage but is by no means necessary to marriage. What *is* essential to traditional marriage is that the couple complement each other, anatomically and in every other way. A gay couple is certainly not the same as (and therefore not equal to) a heterosexual couple; it's as basic as that. An apple is not an orange; why does an orange want to insist it's an apple? An apple is also not better than an orange, but they are substantially different. A marriage is not an individual right--it is instead the right of two heterosexual people to make a life together. Gays can make a life together as well, but the relationship is decidedly different in terms of its core physical and psychological essence. Equality with respect to a great number of things are possible and desireable. Certainly hating gays because they are gays can never be acceptable. But the two kinds of relationships will never--can never--be the same. No hate; no bigotry; no gay-bashing; and no need to appeal to religious belief. Just the cold, hard, clearly observable facts.— March 8, 2010 11:36 a.m.
