Visduh, to me this is so not about party politics as I could not tell you who is who in this situation, this is all about business and good management.

When everything was rosey, and development was running nonstop, amuck really, the District/Region was rich and felt like they were printing money, they got lazy and sloppy. After 5 or 6 years of depressed economic situation they got caught with their respective pants at their knees and the building industry whores servicing them. Where's the political issue, it looks like greed and stupidity to me.

Yes since the DA is on one side, white and Republican and the Sweetwater 4 ish are, I guess, Dems and non-white there can be all this extra stuff (sh_t) thrown in. I say if you are caught own up to your error and move on at least you still have your dignity and can look yourself in the mirror everyday.

As for the public, what can you do, if they don't know what is really going on they will just keep voting name recognition, race and party, never issue or credential.

This is where we need to have a series of questions and or reforms that all future candidates for City council or local school boards need to answer so we can each decide who best meets our individual ideas of the future of the region. Campaign Spending and Term Limit are the next steps as would be removing reference to any party affiliation.

Finally the effective media blackout by the Union Tribune to most SUHSD issues is insulting and Sir Manchester, should be embarassed if he has anything to do with the lack of coverage of the situation down here. All I have to say is "ROSEBUD", BBQ

I'm not sure that in a business this CEO would have been fired by now. It would surely happen if this mismanagement and bullying got press coverage and negative press coverage at that. There have been some instances of dreadful decision making along with intimidation that didn't get reported in the Wall Street Journal, and they were ignored until the company failed.

I fully agree that Brand should be gone again already. But it will take a new board to replace him. After all, after all the Texas-connection misery, these same bozos rehired him after he was fired unceremoniously from the supe job in San Marcos. They knew what they were getting, they wanted what he offered, and paid him 'way too much.

If you get a chance listen to Mayor Cox' State of the City Address. She gave it last Tuesday,12th. She spoke about CVESD and then Sweetwater. It should be up on the City Website. It is an E ticket ride as she compared the two and about all she could say about Sweetwater was that it had dedicated teachers and staff and about a 20% drop out rate.

When you compare the two, CVESD with some 44 campuses working with the same demographic and tax base seems to have found a way to maintain reserves and win awards for the product they put out. The difference is stark and can only be attributed to the failure of upper management.

mko - I have no doubt Ms. Cox had to think long and hard to find any saving grace regarding SUHSD - the employees.

You are right, when you look at CVESD and then compare it to SUHSD one wonders - how could two like worlds be soooooo different - the answer - LEADERSHIP!!!!!!!

Please clear up a point for me, someone. People I knew who had been called to the grand jury in the past were not allowed to tell anyone about their subpoena. If this is the case, then it's unclear how the Sweetwater admin would be able to contact employees and offer them legal services?

Also, if one of the attorneys that was paid is a criminal defense attorney--why would taxpayers pay for that--and what district employee would need that--and would whatever this person was seeking advise about have been committed during the course of working for the public? This doesn't seem right.

Please tell me this is an April Fool's joke that somehow is just running a bit late!

How completely strange is this...meaningful athletic competition teaches and inspires student athletes to do their best, to keep improving!

It is a major motivating force for teams and individuals, depending on the sport, to make it to CIFs. To exchange this for some rinky-dink local pretend "competition"?

So then Sweetwater would have its own pseudo-championship system, and then Sweetwater students can say they are champions?! It doesn't work that way.

Is there anything that can be done to halt this latest ill-concieved outburst by Ed Brand, and the lackeys McCann, Cartmill, Quinones and Ricasa, who among them apparently still cannot come up with enough functioning brain cells to do anything at all.

So Brand wants the money for one of his friends, or perhaps it is time for his RV to be replaced? (In a previous term as superintendent, rehabbing Brand's RV was a shop project for one of the schools. Not kidding).

This spineless board of trustees...has there been a more hopeless aggregate ever collected...who are supposed to be leaders in education, yet fail time after time--and continue to fail with no apparent sense of shame or awareness of how completely inept they are?

In addition to the well-known football teams that have had successes, both girls and boys water polo teams have been really working to get to CIF playoffs for the past several years. Sweetwater has had many swimmers in CIFs, and even have some record-holders in some events. About those football teams--does anyone think that the scouts would show up for Sweetwater's backyard championship? Does anyone think that college scholarships will be given out if no one plays against the strong teams...you are basically consigning all future Sweetwater students to division III programs, if they get to go on in their sport at all.

Again, Ed Brand and this board of trustees seem determined to undermine what has been built up here in Sweetwater. It actually seems like they exist to take away what students have been lead to believe is the expected future available to them as part of their high school experience!

I will have to give up my politically correct card to say this, but I must. This is nothing but sheer idiocy. For which there is no excuse.

eastlaker April 11, 2013 @ 3:24 p.m.

Best of luck to the ROP/CTE students. The short-sightedness of this voting majority board is nothing short of stupefying.

As Bertha Lopez stated, "Something is wrong when you choose iPADs over students!"

We all know something is definitely wrong in Sweetwater, and has been for some time. For reasons unknown, this voting block of McCann, Cartmill and Ricasa has no qualms about being Ed Brand's willing henchmen.

Sort of like when I went to the opera and saw "Murder in the Cathedral"--except far less heroic (?) than those three...but greatly destructive, nonetheless.

In a related issue, I hope McCann isn't planning on any further crowing about his upcoming deployment. There is nothing he can do at this point to piece together the shards of a political career--he self-destructs time and time again at each board meeting, and the most amazing thing is that he is completely unaware. The eyes are open but the brain is not engaged. A common trait among Sweetwater trustees.

Where to begin ??? Maybe his print shop in Mexico that does print work for the district through a shell printer in otay owned by Paul and his cousins the hermosillos !!!! Or the pay off the board and super got from the current contractor who is rebuilding the Schools for San ysidro now ????!!!! Board has known about the pay offs because the all receive there share of it !!! Why do you think they fight so hard to stay ??? The money is very good as a board member And I got it from a former boArd member !!!! Every one hopes the district attorney will do something but until u clean house nothing will happen !!! If they investigate the current contractor they are using to rebuild the schools they will find that he is related to someone in the district high up !!! But nobody wants the truth not even the news paper !!! Fact is that no one really cares !!! They just pretend to and want to be able to say that they tried !!! Why did the last board member quit after asking for a home !!!! Because the were part of the case !!! Now since the case against them has been dropped the only thing that comes to mind is that they are turning snitch on this case and it is slowly coming out !!!! Just like Paul was a key witness to the case and now he got paid off by the district to keep his mouth shut and plead the fifth and the school districts attorney will now fight to block every thing from coming out !!! See its cheaper to pay off Paul than to pay 18 million to the law suit filed against them and even if they loose it still buys them the time they want !!!! Did everyone know that Paul and his wife together have an income of close to half a million a year working for different districts ??? Talk about being greedy !!!! Oh yeah like some in San ysidro say He is innocent and he has worked here his whole life for the children !!! Hell no he did work for his own children to give them high paying jobs and some experience so they can later transfer and live life grand !!! HahahahahHh FU. MP

Mission accomplished. Now all of the SWC board members are political activists from the same clique.

There is no professional, racial, political or intellectual diversity on the board. This goes against the grain of what a board of directors is supposed to be. Political activists scratching each others backs. But we've come to expect this type of behavior in the South Bay school districts.

After another frustrating Board meeting where the "elite" omniprescient, omnipotent, four (McCann, Ricassa, Cartmill and Brand, said with complete derision), steamrolled the public with another underplanned, misguided, gotta happen now scheme with Allient University (a bit of an oxymoron), I'm resorting to one of the only opportunities to speak my mind.

After speaking to the fact at the Board Meeting that the College Route (which the chosen ones are advocating, hell stuffing down our students throats) is only as good as the foundation we are giving our kids and that this route is not for everyone, HE-double-Hockey-sticks, 80 % of our students will not attend University right out of High School.

We continue to cut the very basic industrial and job skill programs that were the core of our nations greatness, between vocational training, ROP and Adult schools we have taken the tools right out of our students hands.

Board of Trustees do you think Engineers, Doctors, Surgeons, became that way because they read about holding tools and following directions, no they did not, they at some point learned to manipulate tools, hopefully under the guidence of a craftsman in wood or metal shop or a gifted teacher in cooking or sewing classes, where kids can explore what it feels like to create something, get an idea what a career might feel like or even decide that those thing are not what they want to do. We have given up on these essential skills and experiences in our Education system, by only advocating the University route, which all of you have taken.

The soon to be enacted Allience (Pun intended) with Allient University is first a costly alternative to existing programs which we should be fostering and second the dumbing down of the whole college/university experience by reducing the GPA required to start classes/attend/pay for to 2.0, again the Higher GPA students will recieve a "Discount" or Scholarship. (can you say Used Car/Time Share Salesman). If this is such a great deal to our community why do I feel like the timeline of Four months is inadequate to enact a curriculum.

Oh by the way Allient University sold their campus in Scripps Ranch to Kaiser or one of the other Hospital Groups about four years ago, are they getting evicted? Maybe that's the reason for the "Quick-Contract" and the free classrooms.

To my community this disregard by the Four Amigos to the real needs of our students, Community, Region, State and Nation is appalling. "Beware of the Snake Oil salesman, at a minimum what he is selling won't hurt you but remember it most likely won't make things better either". BBQ

Strange how things work. The indignation over these two cheerleader coaches being stiffed their wages could figure far larger in upcoming elections than any or all of the revelations about corruption, bribes, double dealing, shady connections, and all that jazz. In fact, some more criminal investigations could also result from this. If it goes that way, the So County voters will do the right thing for the wrong reason, i.e., voting the bums out and going for a real reform slate. They SHOULD be voted out for all the corrupt acts and their rubber stamping the Brand proposals and all the financial shenanigans and failed real estate deals and dubious connections with shaky universities and . . . But what could bring them down is the matter of a couple cuties being gypped a few hundred bucks they were promised. Go figure.

bbq May 15, 2013 @ 10:54 a.m.

timtim my how the shoe changes when you get to call people names and step out on your soapbox.

First off the Review process within the district is flawed as witnessed by the fact that our two Cheer Coaches were allowed unfettered access to students and facilities without passing the background requirements of the District, not to mention being given at least a verbal contract from a district employee. Does this sound like due diligence?
Doesn't the district have the responsibility to Vet their employees? Doesn't the district have the responsibility to protect our students?
How about the bad steering box on the School Box not fixed for over a year or unqualified Bus dirvers sent into the Mountain Areas for field trips?
Should I really have to go on?

Second you are comparing rotten apples to rotten Bananas, of course I am outraged at the situation, but I also have not heard word one from the district/Brand/Board of Trustees acknowleging the issue, an issue the district, yes, and the SEA should be addressing.

So again timtim are you listening to "all" the parents in the district or only condeming the ones who are holding you to a reasonable standard for the position we assume you hold? BBQ

If this were a desirable alliance (pun intended), there would be no need to be so sneaky about the proposal and what the board agenda really committed the District to do and to spend. Why did you have to be so sneaky about it?

"SNEAKY: Part of Speech: adjective
Definition: underhanded, dishonest
Synonyms: base, contemptible, cowardly, deceitful, devious, disingenuous, double-dealing, duplicitous, furtive, guileful, indirect, low, malicious, mean, nasty, recreant, secretive, shifty, slippery, sly, sneaking, snide, stealthy, surreptitious, tricky, underhand, unreliable, unscrupulous, untrustworthy."

That about covers it, Ed. We are not impressed, amused, or fooled.

WTFEd May 30, 2013 @ 11:23 p.m.

Whose name was on those checks to SGI. Diane Russo. Who either signed off on the process or did NOT report misdeeds? Diane Russo. Who were joined at the hip? Ed Brand and Diane Russo. What former CFO works now for the firm that did an Audit for the District a few years ago. Diane Russo.

When is the public going to wake up and call out this fraud!!! The firms name is Eric Hall who did the audit. Follow the money. Lots of people know this but few like me are willing to say. The rats at 1130 sense that King Rat's time is near when he threw Choir Boy..errr John McCann under the bus in those transcripts. Ed will look good in an Orange Jump suit if they can find one big enough. John your political career is now destined to decline. Next stop South Bay Irrigation District..or maybe better Executive Director of County Vector Control to rid the District of the rats.

I found it interesting that Mccann claimed he did not knw his wife was working for Cabello. He stated he did not know because he was in Iraq, I am wondering in how many households such a fact would not be known. I could have sworn that even John Mccann would need to file taxes on all monies earned by either spouse.

Mccann's dealings with Jaime Ortiz is interesting as well. There are two days worth of Ortiz's testimony posted on two separate pdf's. A must read.

While Quinones is taken to the cleaners in all testimony read so far Jim Cartmill and Arlie Ricasa are referred to as well. Ortiz states Cartmill was one of the board members you did not say NO to. But then so was Arlie Ricasa and Quinones, and Sandoval, and 'the gandara', He made reference to the 'manner' in which Cartmill asked.

Also of interest the spending of Prop O monies to keep the District running. Now that was an interesting tidbit.

It appears Arlie's spouse was perceived to be 'looking for business' so to speak from Rene Flores. Another must read segment.

Folks, I have read every word of every PDF provided - all I can say is SHAME! SHAME! SHAME! While the campaign donations were legal - as were the dinners, and the Laker games, and the Padre games, and the beauty pageant entry fees, and the college education, and the wine and, and, and - it is still incomprehensible that this group found each other and began living off of our bond dollars so to speak. Jim Cartmill, John Mccann, you were a part of the mess. While you may not have been trolling job sites looking for $20 donations you were still trolling - your campaign donations, totalled in the thousands, you are mentioned as receiving some of the expensive food, attending sports events.

As I read the transcripts I found myself asking aloud "why didn't Mr. Schoor press him, why did he allow him to get away with that lie, why didn't he ask why all of the 'um's? Then the light went on in my brain, THIS TRIAL! THIS BUNCH ON THE STAND - is going to be a hum dinger!!!!!!

eastlaker June 3, 2013 @ 10:46 a.m.

I have to say--that bit about a home that is in the name of Arlie and her brother being given as the "local" address for a construction company from out of town...that's just the type of detail that makes it all real. Way to work the angles, members of Sweetwater's Board of Trustees.

Also, McCann's quite odd wording: referring to individuals as 'Boards of Trustees' rather than trustees, or members of the Board. Boggles the mind. Some of these graduates from Sweetwater schools must have been less than scholarly during their school days. Odd syntax...if their English teachers are reading this, it must be very disappointing. For numerous reasons.

Just received a telephone call - this community is a wealth of information. It appears that Jim Cartmill and Tom Hassey go back a very long way. Apparently there is a very long history shared by these alleged 'band of brothers'. Based on this information I guess I could conclude that the pizza party was no surprise to Mr. Cartmill, Hmmmmmmm

Note to The Just - interested?

if you think that your dental work, your boob job, your gastric bypass, or anything else is cheaper in Baja, think again. The place has been a scandal for as long as I've lived in the region--a long time--and nothing much has changed. Many Gringos head south of the border to "save" on many things, and some even attempt to live in TJ or Tecate, and some succeed. Not every physician, not every dentist, not every surgeon, and not every health practitioner there is a fraud. But too many are, and too many practice with impunity. If you value your health, stay away, far away from those discount practitioners in Baja. The life you save may very well be your own.
