If this is truly a contest for original songs, then I personally feel that the song by "Steve and the Pescadero Pickers" should be disqualified due to unoriginality!!! It is obviously a COPY!

0

Breezer March 2, 2010 @ 5:33 a.m.

Copy? I don't think so; The story is well-worded, and is cleverly framed in the familiar chording of the Gilligan's Island Theme. This is creative, not copy.

0

swest99 March 2, 2010 @ 6:35 a.m.

Copy?...So weird Al's ass should be kicked

0

Tinman March 2, 2010 @ 8:18 a.m.

Hey Han's, did you miss anyone's name in that song? Too bad some of that talent didn't rub off.

0

lane March 2, 2010 @ 2:32 p.m.

All you other 'Wanna Be's' give it up! Pescadero Pickers kick ass!

0

619hans March 2, 2010 @ 11:18 p.m.

Everyone's songs are great! I especially like Happy Rons version.... ;) I love them all.... (but you should vote for mine!)

0

Ed100 March 5, 2010 @ 8:57 a.m.

It's a voting contest. Not a contest based on actually how good the song is. The sour comments from some of the band affiliates are looking petty so far. So... listen to all the songs, and vote for the one that you like the best, or is the most memorable. Let's not make these comments turn into a bickering word war.

0

iloveob March 5, 2010 @ 1:31 p.m.

The entry by the Pescadero Pickers has very clever lyrics that perfectly fit the famous old melody.

0

Breezer March 5, 2010 @ 3:31 p.m.

Ed100 nailed it. Let's have a good time with this. My hat's off to all the creative folks who went to the effort to submit an original song. Vote for your Fav, and stay tuned!

Ed100 March 11, 2010 @ 12:43 p.m.

Hans... why would you backstab me by emailing my Facebook friends to vote for you? Are you that desperate to win this contest? You could have found another way... This way was ethically uncool. The truth always comes out...

0

Ed100 March 11, 2010 @ 2:47 p.m.

Thanks for the votes so far... I may not win the contest, but at least I played it fairly. Please vote again, you can vote once per day...

0

pepe March 11, 2010 @ 6:19 p.m.

I too vote for the "Fishermen!" In my village, I lived near the Casa de Barca estero, and my famous neighbor was Che.He had a large poster size picture of Maynard, framed, and attached to the wall of his palapa. The Pescadero song brings back lovely memories of Che unloading fresh oysters from the back of his bicycle, in front of his hut, in a tropical rain. Allez vous Estaban and le Pickers! Muy bonita y muy bien! Gracias!

0

lane March 11, 2010 @ 8:15 p.m.

Quote from voicemail from Hans "My song is better than yours, and it's going to win... quit your snivelling"...

Hans... I don't even know who you are anymore. When did you turn evil?

0

Tejeda March 12, 2010 @ 2:49 p.m.

I had a hard time deciding between the songs by speakingidly and the pescaderos. I really liked them both. I saw the entry by hans & fritz had the most votes, and it didn't make sense to me. How in God's name can this many people like this song? It is truly awful!

0

Ed100 March 12, 2010 @ 9:05 p.m.

I'm not saying that Hans is cheating, I don't like that he spammed my FB friends to vote for him. I asked him to stop but he won't. If I ask you not to should be enough...

0

lane March 12, 2010 @ 9:08 p.m.

HEY EVERYONE,YOU NEED TO READ THIS. MARCH 11 2010 I WROTE A DIRECT COMMENT TO 619HANS, REGARDING HIS LACK OF CHARACTER IN THIS CONTEST. I ADMIT THAT IT WAS DIRECT BUT TRUTHFUL. NOW TODAY 619HANS WROTE A RESPONSE ON MY PERSONAL EMAIL THAT WAS RIGHT IN LINE WITH WHAT I WROTE ABOUT HIM. I WAS GOING TO COPY AND PASTE THE COMMENT FOR ALL OF YOU TO SEE BUT I DIDN'T SEE THE NEED TO. HE RESORTED TO USING THE 'F'YOU BOMB OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. LOOK THIS IS JUST A CONTEST FOR THE BEST NEIGHBORS SONG, RIGHT? 619HANS HAS A SONG ENTERED LIKE THE REST OF THEM AND MAY THE BEST ONE WIN! WHO KNOWS WHO WILL WIN? WHO REALLY CARES? DOES ANYONE OUT THERE IN THE MUSIC BUISNESS HAVE ANY MORALS OR COMMON SENSE? WHY DO YOU PLAY MUSIC? BECAUSE IF YOU CAN'T PLAY NICE, MAYBE YOU NEED FIND ANOTHER OUTLET FOR YOUR ANGER. JESUS LOVES YOU MAN!

marzbarz72 March 18, 2010 @ 7:43 a.m.

Not that I don't like Steve and the Pescadero Pickers song, it does seem to me that the tune is in fact the theme from Gilligans Island. Sure the tune is catchy, it's been catchy for nearly 50 years. That's why almost every person in the world can recognize it. This not only goes against the contest rules, but copyright laws as well. The contest is not just for original lyrics, but original music as well. Or if not original, the music must be at least owned by the submitter, (the rules are very clear about the music).
As for the Weird Al argument, yes, he does copy music. However, he gets pemission, pays to copy it and is not submitting it in contests as original music.
So,Steve and the Pescadero Pickers, good lyrics, nice rendition of the tune, but too bad it does not fit into the rules of the contest.
An interesting note about one of Weird Al's songs: Weird Al was given permission by Coolio's label (who owned the rights) to parody Ganstas Paradise, and Al was given the impression that the artist had also given his blessings. Apparently Coolio did not know about this and got quite miffed over the whole thing. However, it's not like Gangsta Paradise was a completly original song to begin with. It was a reworking of Stevie Wonders song Pastime Paradise. Weird Al and Collio have now made nice-nice, and Weird Al now makes sure he speaks directly to the artists before he records a parody, even though he may already have the legal permission.
0

axismundi March 18, 2010 @ 1:24 p.m.

not to be construed as a negative remark re contest rules, the Pickers offering is clearly parody. it uses humor along with imitation protected by the 1st amendment as freedom of artistic expression. any casual listener will have no trouble discerning that this little ditty is not to be taken seriously. parody is fair use under the copyright act. artists such as Steve and his fellow pickers must be allowed flexibility to create new works that evolve through a transformational use of the basic tune, it in no way diminishes the value of the original work and in and of itself embodies a reflective social comment on that era. it is very doubtful that any rights have been trampled upon here so why not let the will of the people be demonstrated by the vote. Bob would have wanted it that way.

0

mrfhtm March 25, 2010 @ 11:16 a.m.

wesclark - where in the world did you come up with that? A COPY of WHAT? JUST MAKING statements like that out of the blue makes me wonder if you were one of the guys that used to empty out port "A" pods when they were building the transAtlantic...?

A COPY? Do you mean someone copied that song word for word & then posted it on this site for the contest?

I was also on the U.S.S. Indianapolis & survived! (I know B.S. When I READ IT! - Go Take a Flying Leap off a cliff)...

Why I otta... Oh man I'm burning up just thinking about that stupid comment!

As soon as they unplug me from these machines I'm going to lift some weights! (in fact I'll do it myself)...

Get the facts before you post.

619hans March 25, 2010 @ 1:14 p.m.

Odin is the Best God* If you ask him into your heart you will be blessed by Valhalla and find true Peace and Wisdome in your life. Hail Oden

0

mrfhtm March 25, 2010 @ 5:34 p.m.

Captain Manhattan here to say:

Odin - Requires you die in battle in order to get into Valhalla (NO ONE IS GOING TO DO THAT FOR AN IMAGINARY MYTH) - Odin isn't in the world of earth he is in Norse mythology & it states that he is the ruler of Asgard -(no such place ever not even in the stars)...

Well that was a little lesson & to clarify in what it is you speak of from Germanic paganism. YOU MUST DIE in BATTLE to get into Valhalla...(MYTH ONLY)

Jesus Christ is the living GOD among men & women Jesus is salvation, love & peace...(not to turn this into a debate - Jesus Saved me when I asked for it...)

Yes in this battle of the bands - I DO SEE A REAL V I C T O R ! ! !

I was also on the U.S.S. Indianapolis & survived!

Oh yeah - MY NAME IS Captain Manhattan!

Artists copy other artists sounds all the time - Look at harry connick jr or michael buble or any other singer / groups they all copy the flavor of the sounds they hear & people know it sounds like the other singer BUT different. We found this site & shared it with our community leaders & we voted on the songs we liked best just my dorm & then it was shared with other dorms I'm sure. As a music lover myself I also shared it with my fellows up in Washington & parts of canada. We are looking forward to seeing more contests like this for the music community.

We have found a forum that is pretty cool.

We love to Puck it up...

Hat's off to Steve and the Pescadero's !!!

0

Jay Allen Sanford April 4, 2010 @ 12:19 a.m.

Wow, I'm blown away by all six entrants! Congrats to Steve and the Pescadero Pickers - we'll be seeing them in the funny pages, all right!

Thanks to everyone who entered, voted, and commented - our little comic strip seemed like a nifty idea, but we never could have foreseen anything like these songs or the responses to them. I'm sure I'll play these tunes every time I need a little cartoonistic inspiration for my scribbles ---
