Thank God that this restaurant posted an add in the Reader. If it weren't that I would have not found my own little piece of home that, at time, I can miss so badly. I have lived in San Diego for 6 years, but at heart I am still just a southern white boy with parents born and raised in Alabama. I thought my mom's made-from-scratch fried chicken, fried okra, collard greens, and yams were the best thing ever. That is until tonight, when I stepped foot for the first time into Stockdale's. My girlfriend saw the add and thought we should go, but I was extremely skeptical. To keep this short, it is the best southern food I have ever had, and we are talking about 18 years of it growing up (until I left for college). Everything we ordered was so good, I truly couldn't figure out what I liked the most. Sweet tea, fried catfish and snapper, collard greens, hush puppies, yams, fried okra....and topped off with banana pudding (with coconut shavings in it!).
I know it isn't healty to eat like this all the time. But every once in a while, when you just want some good ol' home cooking....or if you are from the south and you want some LEGIT southern cooking, do not waste a second and get in the car and head straight there. They have a buffet on Sunday night and jazz music on Fridays. Incredible. Thank you Stockdale's for existing. You just brought home to California.
