A surfer named Indiana Joe got a job as a deckhand on a 36 foot crab boat built in 1919 out of Santa Barbara harbor in California. He invited me out to get dropped off by the captain on San Miguel island for four days in July 2009. We jumped off the back of the boat and paddled our gear in for a remote island experience. Within thirty minutes, Indiana speared a 45 pound ling cod supplying us fuel for our stay. While he dove, I explored the island, rich with its wild habitat and Chumash Indian remnants including abalone midden sites. This photo was taken the first day late afternoon of the sand dunes near the top of the island.
