Toyon Flowers. Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia) is an important shrub native to the California coastal sage scrub community. Also known as Christmas berry and Christmas holly, Toyon has prickly leaves and red berries that resemble those of holly. The berries are particularly prevalent around November and December.
