What did you want to be when you grew up?

It was a baseball player. Probably for the Padres, since I grew up here. But there was a time…probably when I was 15, that I realized…hitting a curveball is a bitch! I think a lot of boys dream of growing up and becoming a professional athlete. But technically, I’m still not grown up. So I still have time to brainstorm.

I always wanted to be a veterinarian. I love animals. But since I got knocked up when I was 16, that didn’t happen. I have two kids now, and my 16-year-old wants to be a veterinarian now. It’s such a strange coincidence. I wonder what percentage of people actually get the job they wanted when they were young.

Really, I didn’t have a clue what I wanted to do. I certainly didn’t think about a career in music. In fact, I didn’t even start playing guitar until I was 15 years old. I sure wish I would’ve started when I was a lot younger. But, thinking back to when I was a kid, I don’t think I thought about the variety of things adults do for work.

I had piano lessons as a kid, but at that age I wasn’t thinking of making a career doing that. I’m sure most children that are forced to take piano lessons from their parents just want to get through the practices that are forced on them. Once you realize the piano can be used for more than just the classical stuff, you can have fun with it. Playing blues, honky-tonk, and rock with Rick and the Ravens, and then with the Doors…it’s been a blast.

I always wanted to be either a forest ranger or involved in animal preservation. I didn’t think about a career in music as a child. It wasn’t until I was a freshman at Harvard. That’s when I became determined to make a career out of playing guitar and making music.

I joined the Navy, so I couldn’t have had too high aspirations. It was 40 years ago when I was a kid growing up in New York. I suppose that when I was playing football I thought about someday playing for the Jets. And when it was baseball season, I probably thought about playing for the Yankees and having my jersey retired with all those other greats like Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle.
