Coastal Sol Community Beach Cleanup July 7th

San Diego is known for its beautiful beaches, and our city has always been proud of its environmentally-friendly events and nonprofit organizations. One of the newest collectives making waves is Coastal Sol, who are holding their first beach cleanup on July 7th at the Oceanside Pier. The leadership project is coordinating with I Love A Clean San Diego's Adopt a Beach program to share their pollution and waste statistics from the event with the community. Though Coastal Sol is a relatively new project, it is quickly gaining a loyal following of eco-conscious individuals and supporters. The Oceanside Pier cleanup will be the first event of many, and will be a fun, educational way of protecting our local ecosystems. It is taking place at 8:00 am on July 7th at the North side of the Oceanside Pier. Check out their website www.CoastalSol.org for more information about the event and interesting facts about our beaches.

Bethany Hamilton's Surfboard on display at Oside Surf Museum.

Her surfboard with shark bite is on display. She is one of the most inspiring and courageous surfers in the world today. She lost her left arm in Oct 2003 shark attack while surfing the north shore of Kauai. She continues to surf around the world today. Amazing human. This is a powerful, must-see exhibition.

Since 1952, Boys & Girls Clubs has worked to get Oceanside kids off the streets and out of trouble by engaging them with fun and constructive academics and activities. They’re helping kids reach their dreams & transform themselves into successful adults in our community.

A key step is renovating the aged & worn Townsite Club located at 401 County Club Lane in Oceanside, hopefully in time for camp programs this summer.

“The Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside has always provided a safe, fun and constructive environment for all kids to spend time during non-school hours,” says CEO Tammy Walz. “Everyone knows us for our fun after-school activities, but what is even more exciting is the hundreds of kids coming to us for tutoring, technology training and other skills to conquer college or a career.”

Boys & Girls Club serves more than 1,400 children daily in Oceanside & North County. The Club serves all types of kids where they are, in an inclusive environment. BGCO also operates programs at 6 school sites in the Oceanside Unified School District and 5 school sites in the Vista Unified School District.

With that many kids coming to the Boys & Girls Club, it’s no wonder the 40-year-old Townsite location needs a serious overhaul. Renovations are underway, but the Club is asking the North County community for financial help.

“We aren’t asking for an elaborate facility, but we need the community’s support to rebuild the Townsite Club in time for summer camp and for many years to come,” says Walz.

Key renovations: § Upgrading electrical infrastructure to support computer, tutoring, digital media & robotics programs § Adding bathrooms for staff § ADA compliance required by code — needed by our disabled kids § Kitchen upgrades to allow for cooking and healthy eating programs § Awnings to protect children & staff from the summer sun § Heating & insulation during winter § Outdoor lighting for security

The Townsite renovation has attracted tremendous support. A new Interactive Media Room donated by DEI Holdings Inc. was renovated in October 2010. The room features interactive technologies & games to encourage exercise and combat childhood obesity. The building was repainted thanks to a donation by Jim Baird, a painter and Boys & Girls Club alum. Erickson-Hall Construction Company is the builder and Groth Architects, Inc. is the architect.

Boys & Girls Club is seeking $650,000 to cover renovation costs. Everyone from small families to large corporations can help. Opportunities:
