Dine and Donate; Soda & Swine's YMCA Benefit

Beginning Monday, July 1st Normal Heights’ most buzzed about mom and pop-style meatball shop, Soda & Swine, will proudly partner with the Y and local nonprofit, Philanthro, in a five-day effort to raise money for the newest neighborhood expansion, the Copley-Price Family YMCA. Soda & Swine will be encouraging San Diegans to dine and donate, with 50% of all profits raised (beverages and cocktails excluded) to directly benefit the neighborhood’s new facility. Serving the surrounding Mid-City areas of North Park, City Heights, Kensington-Talmadge and Normal Heights, the brand new Y will meet the needs of a growing and diverse community, making sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. Formal groundbreaking on the new location is anticipated for September 2013.

WHY: As Mid-City grew, the pre-existing 56-year old Copley Family YMCA in City Heights was forced to improvise in order to meet the community’s changing needs. After years of making do with cramped quarters, the Y is now forging ahead with plans for a 53,000 square foot, LEED certified facility. It will feature two pools, gymnasium, pre-school and school-age child care centers, teen center, spacious fitness and wellness center, group exercise rooms, a demonstration kitchen and an outdoor soccer arena. The new Y will be located approximately one mile from the previous location.

WHERE: Soda & Swine AND Polite Provisions

Polite Provisions, 4696 30th Avenue

**guests may order at the S&S counter, yet still dine in Polite Provisions

Shop Locally!!!! Many of the privately owned stores that once lined University Ave and El Cajon Blvd are just empty store fronts coated in graffiti, boarded windows and vandalism. We've lost the cozy charm of our neighborhoods to Walmart and internet shopping.

Where I come from in Chicago, the boxes pizzas are delivered in generally taste better than San Diego pies, but there is an outstanding sneak joint I'd like to recommend. If the lines are too long at Lefty's, keep heading south on 30th and turn left when you hit Thorn. Located as far off the beaten path as one might imagine, De Luca's Pizza is positioned smack dab in the middle of a residential block at 3226 Thorn St. The $25 special with the works is as big as a coffee table and can probably feed 6 to 8 hungry eaters. (The box is so big I couldn't fit it in the oven to keep it warm!) Tell them you'd like it crispy and enjoy!

Whoever keeps stealing and blowing up my recycle bin and pooping by my dumpster on Utah needs to KNOCK IT OFF! What is your major malfunction anyway? If we catch you we are going to make you pick your poop up with your mouth then we will make you eat that poop then we will all poop on you and make you eat our poop.

Yes! Should I post a picture? One time in FRONT of the dumpster and it looked like someone slid in it and it blocked the whole front so we had to go to the side to open it. Today there is a giant turd right next to it!! WTH they aren't even using TP!! And there is an empty smaller trash can they could have just pooped right in that!!

They need to fix the pot holes on 30th. Also there is a purple dildo on the corner of 30th and Lincoln if someone lost it, well that's where it is

I think they should paint the water tower with art. There is art painted everywhere in NP why not that big dull gray canvas?

Coco's on El Cajon Blvd. closed down. I never went there anyway, so no biggie. There's no shortage of places to eat along there.

That's the truth! Where's your favorite spot on ECB? I'm so spoiled for choice I end up eating something boring.

Rudford's Restaurant on El Cajon Blvd (1 block west of 30th Street) is a neighborhood favorite. It is on the NE corner and has plenty of parking in the restaurant lot, and another small parking lot immediately to the north. It is has been there forever, is open 24/7, serves a large variety of diner food.

Don't forget to check out the gigantic JFK photo on the exterior west wall of the restaurant. It shows JFK waving from a convertible car as he passes by the front of the restaurant in the 1960's. It is an original photo by a local photographer, but I cannot remember his name. There is attributing info next to he photo @ Rudford's. Great slice of history.

Added bonus: The Reader has $2 off coupons every other week! Good for up to 4 guests at your table.
