Beginning May1, 2013, businesses, community organizations and individuals are being asked to show their support for Relay For Life of Mira Mesa/Rancho Penasquitos and help raise awareness for the fight against cancer by decking out their town – including homes, restaurants, businesses, meeting halls or other areas- in purple. “We want everyone to see purple and to think about celebrating, remembering, and fighting back,” said Carole Harland, Event Co-Chair and Paint the Town Purple initiator. Plans are quickly moving forward to turn Mira Mesa and Rancho Penasquitos purple. The Relay For Life committee will be making 5’ or 8”purple ribbons available for $5 and $8 donations. “We saw this as the perfect opportunity to both raise awareness and to contribute to the fundraising needed to save lives,” stated Harland. 100% of the funds raised will be donated to the American Cancer Society through Relay For Life. For more information on how to participate in Paint the Town Purple, or to purchase the purple ribbons please call Carole Harland at 619-871-1482, or email her at mmpqrelayforlife@gmail.com. The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing about $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, about 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year.
