Alicia and Robert, the owners of a single-family house on Lewis Street in Hillcrest, had heard of people wearing gas masks and robbing houses while they were being tented for termites. So, they decided to pitch a tent in their front yard on May 30, next to the one covering their home.

The couple set up an awning, spread a few nice carpets, brought in a small table, a few cozy pillows, a pair of patio chairs, some beach chairs, ran a couple of extension cords, and plugged in a laptop and portable radio. A 12-pack of Dos Equis was secured under Robert's laptop and the latest copy of the Reader was at their feet.

I don't have the data to back this up, but when I lived in the Egyptian, I was told by neighbors of at least two pedestrian-being-hit-by-car deaths at the crosswalk at Park & Essex (right across the street from Numbers). I believe those occurred at night. All bets definitely off.

If you notice, there have been more police officers on motorcycles stationed all around Hillcrest, catching drivers doing the "California roll," that creeping around corners thing, not stopping fully at stop signs, etc. Walk safe!

Having lived in several neighborhoods since moving here in 1979, I have noticed that living in Hillcrest is one of the most dangerous for pedestrians. Crossing the streets on the Walk sign is a cautious situation at best. One could experience cars creeping around corners that one has the light to cross while one in still in the intersection. Crossing the street at a 4 Way Stop also does not guarantee that impatient drivers will not arbitrarily start driving forward while one is sill in the middle of the intersection.

To be clear, this comment refers to daytime adventures, not night time when all ALL BETS ARE OFF due to the high level of partying in the "downtown area of Hillcrest."
