Its for a Good Cause The Encinitas Lions Club worked two days in one of the beer booths at the annul Gator by the Bay Zydeco Festival in San Diego last Friday and Saturday. Dennis and Sunshine Smith and their crew made over $800 just in tips. Their percentage of the beer sales will be added later. The funds help in many community service projects. One great event the Lions do each year is take blind folks surfing. Wow! Great job Lions!!!!!!

Jimmy Hoffa's Body? Nope, just a huge hole in the ground, right off the Moonlight Beach parking lot at 3rd and C Streets. The huge hole goes way down, more than 20 feet below the street level. They are drilling, adding new sewer pipes underground, rather than rip up the streets to replace. The project is drilling under 3rd St down to the pump station on B St. (Cottonwood Creek), up one block of C St. to the fire station offices, and several blocks down 2nd Street, all mostly to be done underground. It appears that all the dirt being removed is being processed for recycling. Considering the number of gas stations that were along old Hwy. 101, and that every home was on a septic tank up to the 1960s, there may be some other stuff in that dirt.

Last Days For Anderson's Anderson Stationers, the downtown Encinitas icon, is in its last days, expected to close on Tuesday, April 30. Anderson's is one of the last downtown retail establishments - been around over 40 years, long before the invasion of Italian restaurants, wine bars, and Whole Paycheck grocery stores. Owner Mark Anderson passed away last month.

Between the subway, starbucks and whole foods, Encinitas is starting to look like every other coastal town in CA, we are losing our funky coastal vibe to corporate interests...whats next, a costco and a home depot on the 101?

Its Coming Down If you consider $3.96/gallon "coming down." If you're paying more than $4.00/gallon for regular . . . You think money just comes out of ATM's? Encinitas Blvd.'s Valero @ I-5, and USA Gas (formerly ARCO) Birmingham @ I-5 were both $3.96 as of Wednesday 4/17/13 @ 9:00 a.m. And remember, there is no difference between "Billy Bob's" gas and Chevron/Shell/76. All Calif. sold gasoline is formulated and heavily regulated by the state.

That's One Way To Slow Down The Amtrak Trains Amtrak has announced it will soon begin limited service to Encinitas. As we know, the Amtrak trains fly by the Coaster station up to 24 times a day. Soon, the Amtrak Surfliner will be making up to three scheduled stops a day at the E St. station.

San Clemente has enjoyed this type of limited service for years. Their train station stop is literally on the beach at the pier.
If your younger kids have never been on a train before, take 'em. It would be a big deal. Take them on a short trip to downtown San Diego and back. What fun! Also Amtrak is a great way to catch an Angels game, the station is right in front of the Big "A" stadium. Want to surprise your partner with an impromptu romantic trip? Amtrak stops right at The Old Spaghetti Factory at the Fullerton station. A brief get-a-way and nice dinner!
And when riding Amtrak, sit back and relax knowing that the American taxpayer is funding most of your ride. But its still fun!

Post Office @ Sunshine Gardens? I need to get out more. Who knew? I guess after Rancho Park Pharmacy and their Post Office branch closed next to Sprouts, the USPS must have moved it to Sunshine Gardens - corner of Encinitas Blvd. @ Quail Gardens Dr. Most mailing services including Overnight, Priority, packages, and something called . . . stamps? For the post office to be used less and less for communication, there sure is a long line at the Encinitas main post office all the time.

BTW - don't want to give away town secrets, but the PO in the next town south never has a line . . . the one that end with a 7 in its Zip Code . . . and the Zip reminds you of a secret agent . . . If you don't get it, you probably need to get out more.

Not Focusing On This Pretty Kitty - Hopefully Found - But all cat owners must be honest with themselves. There is no such thing as an indoor/outdoor cat. An indoor cat has a healthy life expectancy of 15+ years. With the coyotes, hawks, and possums that still exist in our north coast neighborhoods, and the late night cat fights that can cause infections, a cat that is allowed to hang outdoors, unprotected, has an average life expectancy of only a few years. We usually don't see them but our coastal streets have coyotes walking through them almost every night. I have seen a hawk pick up a small cat sleeping in a driveway. So unless your "cat" specie can also be seen at the San Diego Zoo, be a responsible cat owner and keep kitties indoors.

Really? Is This What We Really Needed in downtown Encinitas? We've spent millions on improving Coast Hwy. Thousands on the historic Encinitas sign. And we get this large, obnoxious, free-standing ATM on the busiest corner at D St.

Let the city know how you feel about this. council@encinitasca.gov

Former Teachers Return to San Dieguito High School Last Friday San Dieguito Academy's Foundation hosted a teacher and staff alumni reunion. Alumni students were invited as well. I got to finally thank Ms. Palmer for supporting me in my failed bid to become ASB President, even though neither one of us could remember which subject she was teaching at the time.

Mark Anderson Passes Away Longtime downtown business owner of Anderson Stationers (on 2nd St.) has passed away. A 1961 graduate of San Dieguito High, he open Anderson's Stationers in '69 and has been one of the oldest continually operated businesses in downtown Encinitas.

As of this posting, I have not talked to any of his family or staff, but it would appear that he died of cancer, as the family suggest donations to the American Cancer Society. Let's hope that Mark made plans for Jim and his great staff to continue this one-of-a-kind business.

Services are Thursday, March 28th, - 5:00 PM at Eternal Hills in Oceanside.

Talked with Jim today @ the store. Unfortunately the store will be closing soon. It is the end of an era, now taken over by big box retailers and on-line consumerism. Jim said Mark would have kept it open just to be able to continue to support his great employees, but it hasn't made a profit in years.

One of the neighbors in Encinitas Ranch wrote me after my story was posted. He talked to the HOA and they said there is no sober living house in the Ranch. Not true. I was there the day this guy jumped out of the second story window of the house on Cypress Hills Drive. He would love to find some more neighbors that will back him up in trying to get this house out of their neighborhood. i don't have his info anymore though. But anyone living there might want to contact their HOA to find out what's going on. Neighbors are complaining that crime has increased exponentially since the home was put there. My son's house was robbed of $50k, worth of stuff 4 days before Xmas and lives in the Ranch.

I see these young moms out almost every morning on Via Cantebria behind Target. Sometimes there are 15 or more jogging with their little ones. Today I was waiting for a UPS truck to turn in front of me. When he didn't move and he clearly had the right-of-way, I saw he was staring at the moms. Being a cautious driver, I simply had to follow his line of sight and realize I still had to wait for him to make his move first. So I waited . . . and waited . . . .but I wasn't staring . . . really. But most of us have to admit, these moms are beautiful in a healthy way. Keep it up ladies!

They really use Liquid Nitrogen? Sub Zero is a newly opened ice cream shop in the Ralph's/CVS/Trader Joe's shopping center. Its the new buzz for dessert lovers. They mix up the cream - still in a liquid form - which your chosen flavor and any toppings, and then freeze it right before your eyes with liquid nitrogen at -321 degrees. One can also order a non-fat, custard, or soy version. A little too sweet for me, and not cheap. $5.00+ for a small. But worth it once or for special occasions. We'll still hit Swirls Yogurt across the street for the regular sweet tooth.

Clearing up some misinformation - the Valero Gas and Oggi's Pizza will be staying. However In N Out's design and construction will create a site plan for all three businesses, creating better parking, landscaping, and egresses that work for all three businesses.

The Enc. Planning Commission approved the plans last Wednesday night. The only negatives comments from citizens were concerns about traffic. Really? They're probably vegetarians. Really? We have the town's largest road which accommodates thousands of cars heading towards SoCal's largest freeway, and one is concerned about traffic created by a Double Double?

No More Drugs At 3:00 a.m. For those of us that tend to shop in "off peak" hours, like rushing into VONS at 6:00 a.m. to get milk, eggs, and bread before the kids wake up, be advised, the Rite Aid pharmacy on Santa Fe Dr. is no longer open 24 hours. You can't refill your vicodin prescription at midnight anymore. But one can still buy ice cream, make up, and motor oil - all the necessities to start your day - 24 hours a day.

Finally . . . Common Sense in Encinitas Fast Food Went through Wendy's on Encinitas Blvd. yesterday. They appear to be the first chain to start using what we drive-thru'ers have needed for years. The Heinz ketchup now comes in peel back containers for dipping fries!!!!!! Like the sauces at other fast food joints. How come the fast food geniuses couldn't see that ketchup packets just wouldn't work while driving. You gave me BBQ sauce and ranch dressing in a dipping container but not ketchup? Wendy's appears to be the first one to use the ketchup containers that Heinz has had on the market for over a year. (Available at Smart & Final across the fwy, next to CVS.)

What do you think about the new bike lanes in Leucadia? I was up and down Coast Hwy. several times last weekend and never saw a bike rider using the full lane. They all stayed to the far right. I think the only ones that will use them are the group riders that fly through town, because they are the only ones going fast enough not to be rear-ended by motorists that don't understand the new lane markings or signage.

Read my Reader story on the issue.

Because 1/2 the $ we pay in gas taxes goes to public transit and bike lanes, not widening our freeways.

Have you noticed how many bicycle shops are on Coast Hwy. now? There used to be only the one in downtown. I think I counted six from Leucadia to Solana Beach. I saw one by La Paloma that I think caters just to women bikers? And include off Coast Hwy., there's one on Vulcan near the 7-11, and CBS - Cardiff Bike Shop - on Newcastle. More bike shops than surf shops? Can anyone list all of them?

To Swami's regulars: Can anyone confirm the story about the big gray cat I saw today in the stairwell bushes? It had a collar with the name "Samson" on it. I assumed it was someone's lost cat. Just as I was calling animal control, someone said that was the "Swami's Cat" and it lived there and was taken care of by everyone. True?

I went by Swami's today and again saw the cat. A lot more friendly this time. I saw the back of his "Samson" name tag on his collar. It read "Swami's Cat." So I guess the story is true. But its too tame to be a feral cat, so belonged to someone at one time. Nice Kitty!
