Kathy’s Place (250 Prospect Place, 619-522-3600) is tucked into one corner of the Sharp Coronado hospital.

Cheery crowd, even though half the people in here must be going through some crisis, and the other half have just come from some operating theater, or working the wards.

Carla and Diane go for a cheeseburger ($3.39). I wanted a bacon burger, but the cook, Benny, says they’re outa bacon. Drat.

But you could try our special,” Benny says.

He points to a pile of seed-topped oblong buns.

“Portobello Rustico,” says the sign, “$6.45.”

“It has a delicious Portobello mushroom in it, no meat,” says Benny.

Hmm, pay double for no meat?

Flower show fall-out.

Letters to editor in today's Eagle-Journal show the dark side of Coronado.

  1. The inimitable Earle Callahan doesn't like all the kid entries getting awards. Used to be that there were winners and losers. Now only winners.
  2. Faye Hammond says the winning homefront at 311 9th St. was not a homefront but a patio.

The photo on flower show site confirms Hammond.

Pool Days

Why is the kiddie pool at the rec center empty? We've had a slew of pool worthy days in the last month or so, and I've gone to the pool with my daughters. It has been consistently void of other children. There are obviously loads of kids in Coronado. The water is warm and the bay view is spectacular...seems I'm one of the few who like to take it in.

ENO Wine Bar – Happy Hour Wine Tasting, Tuesdays, 5:00-7:00PM

Stellar service, gourmet goodies, and a buzz to boot – happy hour at ENO Wine Bar, and now pizzeria, is nothing short of fabulous.

Upon arrival I was disappointed to find that prices had increased from my last visit. But after they lit the heat lamps and poured me six generous tastings ($16.00), I could have camped there all night by the fire pits while gazing out at the Del’s palm clustered, perfect pool.

My group was excited about the quality of wines and food, especially the new artisan pizzas. There is now a wood fired oven placed outside and a chef who prepares your pie right in front of you. This was the best pizza I’ve had on the island (sorry Alexander’s I still love you). Their dough, sauce, and select toppings are made on sight and it’s quality you can taste. I was especially impressed with the homemade fennel sausage and veal meatballs. Pizzas can also be ordered to go and would make for a delicious beach picnic.

*call ahead to be sure they are not closed for a private event http://www.hoteldel.com/eno-wine.aspx

$16 for six glasses pretty good. What's the catch? Pizza cheap, too? I remember paying north of $20 for b&b at the Del, so maybe they suck you in for high prices after 7.

Wine is definitely the better deal. Pizza is $15-$18 for a ten inch...no happy hour special. Worth the price if you are craving a truly artisan pizza.

Attention Vons Shoppers

I’m a bargain shopper who never cuts coupons; I hate coupons. Adept at finding the best deals on the island, I’ve become a big fan and user of the Vons iPhone app. This app saves me at least $10.00 a grocery trip on top of the card club discount. The app is simple, user friendly, and efficient…best of all, no coupon cutting.

There is a coupon center button that has digital coupons you select with a touch of your screen. These discounts are automatically added to your card club member number and deducted upon checkout when you enter your phone number. You don’t even need your phone with you…so simple.

There are also personalized deals catered to your shopping preferences, and you can see the club specials before entering the store. Now I always know exactly what to look for and no longer waste time comparing prices while clogging the grocery isle.

You definitely won’t lose by trying this app…oh yea, and it’s free.

Handsome, not historic

Always impressed by the looks of this place at 10th and Adella, but the owners want to tear it down.

Historic Resource Commission ruled it was historic because, according to last month's commentary in the Eagle, "the current owners' mother was a well-known appraiser in Coronado" (!).

On March 19 the city council overruled the historic commission (3-2 vote) and said go ahead and demolish.

Read the commentary by Carrie Downey in the Eagle.

Finally got photos today.

Farm Fresh at Ferry Landing

“This isn’t a fake farmers market; everyone here is a real farmer,” says Mary Hillebrecht the manager of the Coronado Farmers’ Market. Mary even let me buy a few pints of fresh picked strawberries before the market opened, if I promised to bring a friend next time. I enjoyed her enthusiasm and pride in our local market and promised her that I WOULD be back.

Usually, I peruse the over crowded farmers’ markets of SD merely sampling the freebies and don’t buy much of anything. The Coronado Market is different. Our market (for those who haven’t been) is mostly produce and flowers. Its high quality and reasonable prices make it a necessary stop for many islanders; plus, it’s the perfect size to get in, get what you need, and get out.

I regret that after living on the island for close to a year, this was my first trip to the market. The 2:30-6:00 hours had deterred me, but I’m now going to make this a priority every Tuesday.

Crime Wave

Four people on Coronado Moms Fb group reported bike thefts that occurred over the weekend: one from the bike rack in between the football stadium and BBMAC, one at the rec center, one in front of Village Theatre, and one from the high school. All bikes were LOCKED. I am in the process of figuring out if the locks used were U-locks or cable locks - will keep you posted...

Also, there was a car break in; the car was parked in front of the owner's home. Everything of value was taken, including a hidden valet key.

Kingston Trio Exhibit Extended Through Mid-July at Coronado Museum of History & Art

In 2011, the Kingston Trio was awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for their significant influence on folk, pop, rock and Americana music during the late 1950s and early ‘60s. A retrospective exhibit entitled, Kingston Trio: A World of Music, which premiered in early November at the Coronado Museum of History & Art, was slated to end in early April, but has been extended through mid-July due to popular demand.

Many photographs, oral history interviews, performance clips and other video components shed light on this musical phenomenon, which paved the way for the next generation of musicians. Two of the Trio’s members, Nick Reynolds and John Stewart, had close Coronado/San Diego ties that are explored in the exhibit.

Kingston Trio: A World of Music was guest-curated by Dr. Kerry Joels, former Smithsonian curator and a museum consultant responsible for designing projects as varied as the American Banjo Museum and the Oklahoma Air and Space Museum. Dr. Joels designed a unit on the Trio as an early influence on Bob Dylan for the Grammy Museum’s exhibition on Dylan mounted at the Musee de la Musique in Paris. He is currently working on several museum development projects, and is the Curator for the Kingston Trio Legacy Project.

The Kingston Trio Legacy Project is a California non-profit corporation dedicated to promoting an understanding of the musical and cultural history of the United States through an exploration of the history and contributions of the Kingston Trio.

The Coronado exhibit was developed by the Kingston Trio Legacy Project in conjunction with the Coronado Historical Association. Partial funding has been provided by the County of San Diego’s Board of Supervisors.

The Kingston Trio exhibit will remain on display in the Museum through mid-July 2013. The Museum is located at 1100 Orange Avenue, Coronado, CA. Admission is by donation.

Bike Thefts

My neighbors recently had a garage sale; while back and forth between curb and house their daughter’s bike was stolen. They saw the maroon pickup truck get away down the alley with a dark haired male behind the wheel.

These petty criminals seem to stalk the alleys of Coronado. It’s an unsettling feeling to know that in a matter of minutes your garage could be raided. We accidently left ours open for about an hour and a beach cruiser disappeared.

Take precautions and look out for your neighbors!

Boney’s Best

When I first moved onto the island several friends of mine raved about Boney’s delicious sandwiches. Some even cross the bridge just to get their fare. With high expectations I tried my first Boney’s sandwich and was disappointed with its mediocrity. Again, I kept hearing declarations of Boney’s sandwich addictions and decided to give it a second try. Alas, I found what I’d been missing. The secret to ordering is that you MUST get the focaccia bread and have it grilled. They will modify any of their sandwich choices to your specification. I like to get the Coronado Club grilled. Price range $4.95-$6.95.

What’s YOUR favorite Boney’s sandwich or food selection?

Boney's Bayside Market has the BEST sandwiches on the Island. As mentioned above, any sandwich with the focaccia bread warmed up is Amazing! My favorite is the Island Baja. It's reasonably priced, made with fresh ingredients, and is large enough to even split. Their sandwiches are my 'go to' lunch at least a couple times a week.

What about Rite Aid and Walgreen's?

In yesterday's story "Chain stores, formula retail ordinances and the future of Malibu" the Malibu Times reporter cites this legal precedent:

"The 9th Circuit, which has jurisdiction in California, in a 2003 opinion, upheld an ordinance enacted in Coronado, Calif. The Coronado ordinance caps the number of formula restaurants and treats formula retail stores as a conditional use. The court stated, “[The] primary purpose was to provide for an economically viable and diverse commercial area that is consistent with the ambiance of the city, and that it believed the best way to achieve these goals was to subject to greater scrutiny those retail stores that are contractually bound to use certain standard processes in displaying and/or marketing their goods or services, and to limit the frontage area of these businesses to conform with existing businesses.”

Interesting complaint on eCoronado today about parked vans in town.

"Waiters To Go van is always (24/7) parked at the corner of 4th and Orange? And does that bother you at all? It bothers me a lot because it is illegal but the Coronado Police does not do anything about it! We have complained several times. Further, just recently, the Firehouse Restaurant has their van parked on Orange between 3rd and 2nd."

And speaking of novelists, what about Henry James.

Of course the Del exploits this kind of thing. From a hotel press release:

An American speaking tour brought James to The Del, where he stayed from March 29 to April 6, 1905. In an April 5th letter to his sister-in-law, James wrote (about The Del): “The days have been of heavenly beauty, and the flowers, the wild flowers just now in particular, which fairly rage, with radiance, over the land, are worthy of some purer planet than this. I live on oranges and olives, fresh from the tree, and I lie awake nights to listen, on purpose, to the languid lisp of the Pacific, which my windows overhang. It breaks my heart to have so stinted myself here – but it was inevitable, and no one had given me the least inkling that I should find California so sympathetic.”

Heard two foreign students talking burgers on the 901 bus to Coronado from downtown early this month. One of them said the best was Wendy’s, downtown. The other one said Burger Lounge in Coronado. (Wendy’s in Coronado long gone, replaced by the Tavern.)

So I asked local research assistants the best burgers in Coronado. Right away they said Burger Lounge (922 Orange Ave - $7.95 for basic burger – grass-fed beef). But then wait, no, what about the Slam Burger at Danny’s (965 Orange - $7.50 for ¼ lb. – plenty of Yelpers love Danny’s).

Also strong support for Deluxe Gourmet Hot Dog (tiniest of all Nado storefronts, 943 Orange – burger and burger dog (!) each $5.99. Is it the eye-level signage that has made the difference? Danny’s puts out their “NBC voted best in San Diego” sign. Deluxe sign says their beef is never frozen.

But assistants finally settled on Nicky Rotten’s – way down on First and Orange. Their 13 kinds of burgers, all at $11.95 including fries, have beaucoup toppings like bleu cheese, bacon.

Me, sorry, but price is important – Burger King is still my king – a whopper at $3 is best burger deal. Down past Nicky Rotten’s at the Ferry Landing.

P.S. For years Danny’s used to promote their Slam Burger with a quote from novelist Alex Theroux, who stayed off and on in Coronado writing for the Reader. Can’t remember what Theroux said – something like “best burger I’ve ever tasted.”
