Sunday 23
From right up the road in Long Beach, garage-pop trio Tijuana Panthers will play Soda Bar behind last year’s well-received release Semi-Sweet. A record, according to the band, that captures their “nice-guy angst.” I don’t know what that means. And the record doesn’t really hold water for me. But I love TJ Panthers in the flesh. These boys bring it onstage. And with Lancaster, PA’s promising "blue-folk" rocking Districts and local faves Golden Beaches setting it up, that’s one solid Sunday-nighter at the Soda.... Other mentionables’d be “Japan Night” at Til-Two, featuring Japan bands Happy, Vampillia, Zarigani, and our own Touchies. DJ Heather Hardcore will be spinning ’round sets at that one...French-Chilean hip-hop hit Ana Tijoux is out to tout this year’s Vengo. She’ll take the mic at Casbah after Kumbia Queers and Cumbia Machin...and comic-actor Rhys Darby (that’s Murray “Gingerballs” Hewitt of Flight of the Conchords fame) splits a funyon at Belly Up with the “bastard child of Shaggy and Bill Cosby,” J.J. Whitehead.

Hip-hop hottie Ana Tijoux will bring the Vengo to casbah Sunday night!

Monday 24
Early on Monday night (6:30p), there’s a Lester Bangs thang down at the new Central Library, where Grossmont College’s Raul Sandelin will screen his documentary Box Full of Rocks, about Bangs’s El Cajon years. Sandelin will entertain a Q&A afterward.... After that, Casbah’s got a rap attack, featuring “Dr. Octagon” himself, Kool Keith. KK’s got a new disc in the bins called Magnetic Pimp Force Field. I know, but be nice, the man’s a hip-hop icon. Local MCs Grammatical B, Odessa Kane, Old English, and DJ Artistic fill the bill...and Canada “shaman beat” band Doomsquad’s at Soda Bar behind this year’s Owen Pallet–approved Kalaboogie.

"Dr. Octagon" himself, Kool Keith, will rock the mic at Casbah on Monday.

Tuesday 25
Reverend Horton Heat will be preaching the rockabilly word at Casbah on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights this week. Flip to Blurt for Dryw’s interview with the duck-tailed dude. Unfortunately, Tuesday night is sold out, so maybe stay in, check the new season of New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine on Fox. What? Fine, The Wolf of Wall Street comes out on DVD. Also, you’ve got laundry to do and a big day at work tomorrow.

Rockabilly bigmouth Reverend Horton Heat blazes into Casbah this week, taking over the club Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights!

Wednesday 26
Already said: Reverend Horton Heat’s at Casbah. The good Reverend’s got a new record called Rev. Breathing deep “The Smell of Gasoline” as I type. And with them death-obsessed psychobilly Danes the Nekromantix and our own sock-hoppin’ rock slinger Deke Dickerson setting it up, what else are you gonna do?... Don’t have the dollars for that (25 of ’em — ouch!), L.A.’s Neurotic Exotic dance punks the Moving Units will play a freebie at Soda Bar after O.C. “pop tart” trio Hot Nerds, with Locust/Retox roustabout Justin Pearson at the decks between sets.
