Sunday will see the Ché Café’s final show for the foreseeable future. They’re billing it as the “For the F!!!ing Kids” show and the band list is generous. The big dill starts at noon. Get the deets here: thechecafe.blogspot.com.... Sunday night at Soda Bar, you’ve got Detroit’s favorite soul-rock sextet Jessica Hernandez & the Deltas. The band’s touring in advance of this summer’s Secret Evil CD. Listen to a clip of “Demons” on this week’s podcast. Javier Escovedo of local punk perennials the Zeros and Rebecca Jade & the Cold Fact open the show.
Anti-Monday delivers Octagrape to Casbah. The globby-glob Grape’s got some new songs for fur amps on the interwebs in the form of Vertical Evasion, a two-song stunner of covers of Pretty Things (“Mr. Evasion”) and Swell Maps (“Vertical Slum”). Oh Spirit and Big Bad Buffalo are also on the bill.
Who else but Diana Death would/should celebrate a dead man’s birthday by rockin’ yo ass? Johnny Thunders was a Doll and a Heartbreaker and one of punk-n-roll’s top-shelf songsmiths. Death’s tribute to Thunders — the only of its kind in the known universe — Chinese Rocks will deliver a fitting and faithful set of the guitarist/singer’s material at Tin Can Ale House on Tuesday. Thunders would have been 62. Bat Lords and the Pheasants will be covering some of their own favorites for the affair.... Else: garage-pop act Barbarian and DJ Man Cat will entertain a Reader-sponsored beerfest at Belly Up...while from ’Nawlins, “blackened death metal” band Goatwhore, hits Soda Bar behind this year’s Constricting Rage of the Merciless. Loud locals Lord Howler and Eukaryst set it up.
“If you wanna get to heaven, you gotta raise a little hell.” Words to live by for L.A.-based folk-rocker Robert Francis and his travelin’ band the Night Tide, who bring a little Heaven to Casbah on humpnight. If you like your troubadours with bleeding hearts on sleeve, you will love this guy. Vikesh Kapoor and Maxim Ludwig are also on the bill.... Utter mentionables: adult-contempo crooner and all-around cool cat Chris Isaak plays Humphrey’s by the Bay...Brooklyn’s folksy post-rock band the Antlers duck into Belly Up behind this year’s ANTI- records set Familiars...Til-Two celebrates Fat History Month with Boston band Fat History Month. Dust From 1000 Years and our own Nothingful and Crooked Rulers open that show...while from the funny side of Pride, the very entertaining and very bawdy piano-bar pair Amy & Freddy tickle the ivories and funny bones at Martinis Above Fourth, yukking it up with showtunes and pop songs gone wrong.
