U-31

3112 University Avenue, San Diego

On a recent Saturday night at North Park's U-31, the usual beard-wearing, IPA-drinking scene was turned upside by MayStar's Club Fashion Whore. Fashion Whore is a monthly runway show taking place on the second Saturday of each month at U-31. Fashion Whore is new to U-31, but not San Diego. Organizer May Star has been infusing her fashion showcases into San Diego nightlife by introducing Fashion Whore to local clubs for the last seven years. Fashion Whore features models and designers based mostly in Southern California, but from time to time features national and international talent.

Mermaid Killer design

The night I attended for the Valentine's lingerie edition of Fashion Whore, U-31 was overrun by scantily clad models getting their hair and make-up done while seated at tables normally reserved for beer guzzling. It was definitely an interesting sight. Many U-31 regulars were left standing around scratching their heads.

Lingerie by SugarRox Couture

The Valentine's runway show featured designs from Sarra's Petals (a San Diego/Imperial Beach-based company whose products include sexy lingerie, dresses, and costumes), SugarRox Couture (a lingerie company based out of LA), Mermaid Killer (an international brand from Australia & LA), Fashionatrix (a lingerie line from LA), as well as Pop Creations (also from LA).

Fashion Whore opened with a catwalk show from Mermaid Killer. The casual, alternative brand showcased over-the-top, kitschy tees for both men and woman. They featured slogans that said things like, "Hate me" and "Don't talk to me."

Next up, models took to the runway in racy, barely there lingerie. During SugarRox Couture's and Fashionatrix's showcases, the reaction on the faces of the dudes, most of whom stumbled into U3-1 simply to throw back a couple of beers and were instead gifted with a lingerie show, was absolutely priceless. There was a whole lot of gawking and picture snapping going on.

Dudes taking in the show

Sarra's Petals, the only San Diego-based company in attendance, featured sexy cocktail dresses with loads of sequins and fringe.

Fashion Whore's next runway event will take place on March 8th at U-31 from 8pm-10:30pm. Fashion Whore is currently seeking models, make-up artists, and hair stylists for the event. If interested, visit MayStar's Facebook page for more info: https://www.facebook.com/maystardesigns?fref=ts. The show is 21 and up and there is a $5 cover charge at the door. Afterward, U-31 hosts a dance party. Fashion Whore attendees are encouraged to stay and dance the night away.
