Dr. Gary Small, professor of psychiatry and director of UCLA’s Center on Aging, visits UCSD to speak about “available methods for living better longer, as well as novel approaches in development.”
The Maritime Museum of San Diego hosts the largest tall ship festival on the West Coast, which will “transform the North Embarcadero into a nautical theme park” over Labor Day weekend. The fun kicks off with cannon fire and a parade of windjammers on San Diego Bay.

Palomar Mountain’s volunteer fire department hosts this barbecue fundraiser. Enjoy live music, rides on an antique fire engine, and the “firefighters’ challenge,” in which volunteer firefighters from San Diego departments will battle each other in a series of events.
Native Americans from across the country will converge on Barona Valley to showcase traditional tribal dances, singing, music, drums, cuisine, and handcrafted arts and jewelry at this 41st annual powwow on the Barona baseball field (one mile north of Barona Resort & Casino).

The presentation of the masterful piece is the perfect way to close the San Diego Symphony Summer Pops. Cannons and church bells will be added to the orchestra. Selections by Mozart and Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 precede the grand finale. The evening features conductor Matthew Garbutt, the Navy Band Southwest, and emerging young pianist Chu-Fang Huang.
