Curling, the Winter Olympic sport, is even cooler when played in San Diego. Curl San Diego hosts pickup games throughout the month at the Iceoplex in Escondido. Teams will be assembled at the rink. No instructions, so participants must have some know-how.
Local author Marlene Wagman-Geller will discuss her new book, Eureka! The Surprising Story Behind the Ideas That Shaped the World, in which she divulges the extraordinary origins of common items like the Slinky (created aboard a ship during World War II), the Barbie doll (“inspired by a German sex toy”), and Weight Watchers (which “began with a Jewish housewife in New York”).

It’s a 20-man battle royal to crown a Pacific Coast champion! Finest City Wrestling hosts this kid-friendly show at the Unity Lodge in Normal Heights. The title match pits Ric “the Genuine Article” Ellis against Cooter and Duck in a West Coast heavyweight-championship bout. Plus, So-Cal Crazy versus “The Massive” Maldecido, and many more!

The Southern California Astronomy Exposition begins with a swap meet where local astronomy clubs and organizations offer used, refurbished, and discontinued equipment. The sale is followed by a “star party” on Palomar Mountain, where novice sky-peekers will be assisted by experts in viewing planets, nebulae, and distant galaxies.
The “Festival of Literature, Music, and More” at the Lemon Grove Library celebrates Gay and Lesbian pride month. Sally M. Hall will speak about an online news hub, Toni Duran lectures on the legal-activist group Equality California, henna tattoos available, and music will be provided by musician Lisa Sanders, Mary Dolan, and the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus.

TIME: VISUALLY EXPRESSING THE INVISIBLE
“I have used the camera as a scientific instrument, the way a biologist might use a microscope or an astronomer a telescope, to reveal what is felt but often unseen,” says fine-art photographer David Fokos. Fokos will present a gallery talk in conjunction with his “Haiku — Photographic Meditations” exhibition at the Ordover Gallery.
Enjoy a 50th anniversary celebration of Harper Lee’s classic To Kill a Mockingbird with a film screening (with popcorn!), followed by a book-and-movie discussion moderated by author Susan Vreeland. Commemorative editions of the book to be offered for sale.

Head to the California Center for the Arts Escondido where the Hudson Vagabond Puppets will explore the wonders of pre-history in an old-fashioned revue of original songs, witty jokes, and Earth-smashing dances performed by dinosaur puppets.

It doesn’t matter if you can’t sing, it matters that you want to! Join members of the San Diego FaSoLa Singers for shape-note singing. Sing together — without instruments or formal training — using shape-note notation, a “uniquely American tradition that brings communities together to sing four-part hymns and anthems.”
