Chula Vistan David Butler, appointed the County’s interim assessor–recorder–county clerk by the board of supervisors last March, is exploring whether to run for election. On October 7, he filed a candidate intention statement with the registrar of voters. When they gave him the job, the supervisors added $30,000 to the salary, bringing Butler’s salary to $190,570. … Marco Gonzalez and his Coast Law Group have agreed to pay a $500 fine resulting from his failure to file a lobbying disclosure report for the first quarter of 2009 until July 24, almost three months after it was due. “The report ultimately filed by Respondent disclosed that during the first quarter of 2009, Respondent lobbied five City Officials on behalf of two clients concerning various municipal decisions,” according to a stipulation agreement he signed with San Diego’s Ethics Commission. According to the most recent filings, the Coast Law Group represents the Surfrider Foundation, San Diego Coastkeeper, and Friends of Rose Canyon. Gonzalez is the brother of Lorena Gonzalez, secretary-treasurer and CEO of the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council. … The practice of behesting, wherein state legislators tell their fat-cat donors which nonprofits to contribute to, is alive and well. In June of this year, Republican assemblyman Nathan Fletcher, a part-time surfer, got the Walgreen Co. to give $5000 to the San Diego chapter of the Surfrider Foundation to “support environmental protection.”
