Steve Breen, Pulitzer Prize–winning editorial cartoonist for the San Diego Union-Tribune and author of Stick and Violet the Pilot, will read from his new book about Santa’s secret vacation-island getaway. Cookies and milk will be provided, and Santa himself will stop in to say hello.

Gingerbread houses made by actual architects? Sounds delicious! This competition features cookie-cottages designed and built by leading SD architects, designers, artists, and cultural leaders. Vote for, but try not to nibble on, your favorite mid-century marvels and architecturally inspired confections.

“Bark, the herald puppies sing!” Bring your friendly, leashed dog to socialize with fellow canines at this winter-themed event. Behavior and training specialists will be “on paw” to answer training questions. Complimentary desserts and dog treats will be provided; you can munch on your treats to the sound of live jazz by Forecast.
Get in the swing of things with the Catfish Club’s musical showcase featuring “local talent and San Diego personalities performing as their favorite stars.” Program includes a Temptations revue and a Michael Jackson tribute.

Learn a brief history of this tasty treat and then “dive right into preparing masa, corn husks, and fillings to create two types of tamales — one with and one without meat.” Participants will also learn to make a Mexican Christmas punch. Each student will leave with recipes and a dozen tamales to share or hoard at home.

New Village Arts stages David Sedaris’s comedy about an out-of-work actor who gains employment at Macy’s as a Santaland elf (directed by Kristianne Kurner). “This dose of holiday cheer is not recommended for children.”

The San Diego Botanic Garden is decorated with more than 90,000 sparkling lights on plants and trees through December 30. Enjoy a horse-drawn wagon ride, holiday crafts, live entertainment, marshmallow roasting, children’s activities, and more.

Rifftrax Live presents the stars of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and guest Weird Al Yankovic providing “holiday riffing on some classic Christmas shorts.” Enjoy their wisecracking commentary on a collection of Christmas shorts, including Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, classic commercials, and a musical short extolling the virtues of pork.
