A stabbing incident occurred on the corner of Texas Street and University Avenue in North Park early Tuesday morning, August 18. According to San Diego police radio traffic, at around 1:35 a.m., two men were seen getting into a fight in front of a 7-Eleven on University Avenue.

A police dispatcher said that the stabbing victim was heard yelling, “I’m not gay!” during the altercation. Police responded to the incident and discovered that the suspect -- described as a heavy-set black male about 5’8” wearing dark clothing -- had already fled the scene.

The victim was transported to nearby Mercy Hospital. The extent of his injuries is unknown.

At about 1:45 a.m., a police officer patrolling the streets reported detaining a man matching the suspect’s description three blocks south of the scene of the stabbing on the corner of Texas Street and Dwight Street. The man acknowledged that he had just gotten into a fight and was described by police as bloodied and pretty cut up.

Police also reported the recovery of the suspected weapon; however, it is unclear if it was found on the suspect or if it was discovered elsewhere.

A medic was requested to tend to the man’s injuries, which weren’t believed to be life-threatening. He was shortly ID’ed as the attacker by a witness during a curbside lineup.
