San Diego Names: Matthew and Kevin
Surfing: End of P.B. Drive, Pacific Beach
Father and son Kevin and Matthew emerge from the surf to sit at the water's edge and talk about their session. Dad -- Kevin -- taught Matthew to boogie board eight years ago and has coached him to be a confident surfer. Kevin taught himself to surf over 30 years ago. "We started out with air mattresses. There used to be a rental place down here, and you could get them rock hard and actually stand up with them. Then some friends got surfboards, and that's how we progressed. That's how we gained knowledge of the wave."
Kevin has taken Matthew surfing several places locally, but they have not ventured outside of San Diego together.
"We haven't gone to Mexico yet. That'll be next; when he's more confident in the reefs."
Matthew, 14, took second place in the Jetty Kids contest when he was ten. The next year he advanced an age bracket and took the trophy for sixth place. Since then, competition has gotten tougher for him, but, he says, "I usually make it to the second round."
Now Matthew is on the Mission Bay High School surf team and enters two surf contests each year. Though he does well, he says his dream isn't to turn professional.
"I'd like to just stay good enough to show off to my friends."
