Workin' on the River

— Connecticut Democrat Connecticut Democrat Joe Lieberman, Al Gore's VP candidate in 2000 and Middle East hardliner, is locked in a tough Senate primary race with liberal Ned Lamont, a rabid opponent of the war in Iraq. The race is looking closer and closer, but Lamont has picked up only two small local contributions, that of $500 from John Medcalf, CEO of Votec Corporation, which makes digital voting systems, and $500 from Vista's Patrick McLaughlin. It was different for Bush-friendly Lieberman, who last spring held a big fundraiser here. Financier Murray Galinson, a local insider and member of the board of trustees of California State University, contributed $2000. Richard Galinson, a special-effects expert, also kicked in $2000. The same day Berdele and Richard Katz gave $1000 each. Alan Viterbi gave $4200, as did wife Caryn. His father, Qualcomm billionaire Andrew Viterbi, contributed $1000. Viterbi's Qualcomm partner, Irwin Jacobs, also gave $1000. ... Ex-Nevada Democratic Rep. James H. Bilbray, who is a cousin to GOP Rep. Brian P. Bilbray and now with the Las Vegas law firm of Kummer, Kaempfer, Bonner, Renshaw & Ferrario, has registered to be a lobbyist for CRM Colorado River Marina LLC. He will peddle his influence regarding "Natural Resources-- dredging of river channel."
