Catholics who want to go to confession often can't wait for the one-hour available at their parish on Saturday afternoon, and many are afraid that the priest who they see every Sunday might recognize their voice. At St. Joseph's, that's no problem. During the week, Mass is offered daily at 7:00 a.m., 12:05 p.m., and 5:15 p.m., and confession is available before each Mass, making absolution a midweek possibility. Although confessions are supposed to be a half hour before Mass, be forewarned that priests often show up only ten minutes before, making a good place in line essential. Priests will stop hearing confessions at Mass time, but they are reasonable and get right to the point. Father Guillen is particularly notable for his spiritual insight and hard-hitting suggestions for repentance. If you choose to line up while others are seated, the common practice is to take note of their place and let them go before you. Park on the Fourth Avenue side and enter the small chapel to the north, where confessions are heard. The abundance of homeless loiterers in the area make charitable almsgiving readily available. Be sure to check your parking meter and bring change.
