Ex-San Diego mayor Roger Hedgecock and wife Cindy, Dean and Susan Spanos give to George W. Bush campaign

Irwin Jacobs gives to Bush and Gore

Well-heeled San Diegans continue to give generously to their political causes of choice in the months leading up to election year 2000. The Union-Tribune's David Copley has given $1000 to Congressman Brian Bilbray. Downtown steakhouse owner Laurel Rainwater also gave Bilbray $1000. Controversial port commissioner David Malcolm has contributed $1000 to the reelection campaign of Redlands Republican congressman Jerry Lewis, a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee. Fat-loss queen Jenny Craig kicked in $1000 to the Northern Lights Political Action Committee, run by Senate Appropriations Committee chairman Ted Stevens of Alaska. Her husband, Sid, gave $1000 to George W. Bush's presidential campaign, as did radio talk-show host and ex-San Diego mayor Roger Hedgecock and wife Cindy, who gave a combined $2000. Other Bush donors included Dean and Susan Spanos, who gave a total of $2000. Qualcomm founder Irwin M. Jacobs gave Bush $1000; two weeks later, he gave $1000 to Democrat Al Gore. Jacobs and wife Joan also gave a total of $100,000 in so-called soft money to the Democratic National Committee. Parking-lot king Scott Jones gave $1000 to Gore's rival Bill Bradley. Leap Wireless honcho Dan Pegg gave $1000 each to Bush and his opponent, Arizona senator John McCain. Downtown real estate operator Brian Walsh, son of ex-county Supervisor Jack Walsh, gave Bradley $1000. And La Jolla stockbroker Jack White gave $1000 to Malcolm Forbes. Bush is expected to pick up even more San Diego cash when he stages a giant fundraiser here on November 20, a day after he is set to give what is billed as a major foreign-policy speech at the Reagan presidential library near Los Angeles.
