Sleeping with the Fishes
First time director Nicole Gomez-Fisher’s amateurish attempt at autobiography takes us on a Sex and the City-inspired journey through a dysfunctional life. (Stop me if you’ve heard this one a few dozen times before.) As her on-screen correspondent, Alexis Fish, Gina Rodriguez (Go For It, The Bold and the Beautiful) is all about rolling eyes and broad gesturing. Steven Strait plays bait for fisher of men, Fish, and for those who seldom venture far from their satellite dishes there is John Cariani acting as a reminder of The Jersey Shore. Everything in the film — from its flat TV lighting and boilerplate relationship between Fish and her stereotypically pushy mother (Priscilla Lopez) — is steeped in the familiar. 2013.
