Formula to scare up a Halloween box office hit: an attractive cast, too advanced in years to be playing teenagers, that gradually succumb to death-by-billing? Check! A supernatural force – in this case a trademarked talking board — that refuses to die? Check! Parental figures conveniently away on business? Check! A major toy company calling the shots? Check! Squandering half the film’s running time rummaging through a deserted house in search of spooks and not devoting one second to finding a fuse box to restore light? Check! Hollywood’s PG-13 opiate of swapping out genuine psychological chills for cheap, Dolby-enhanced jolts of sound destined to scare the socks off the nine-and-under set? Check! Check! Reaction to Ouija? Bored! Keep telling yourself its just gamey. Directed by former SFX technician, Stiles White. Good bye. (2014) — Scott Marks
