Lonely Are the Brave

The periodic drunken bender of a New Frontier cowboy lands him, for once, in more trouble than he bargained for, and the trouble escalates into a test of his survival and his self-image in the modern world. The symbols of the Age of Technology are a little heavy-handedly drawn, but modesty of presentation generally outweighs pretentiousness of theme in this engaging re-evaluation of the mythic American hero. A nice bit by Gena Rowlands, rustling up some grub in her snug kitchen and blue jeans, and undisguisedly glamorous. With Kirk Douglas, Walter Matthau, and Carroll O'Connor; directed by David Miller. 1962.
