Boys, girls, 60mm lenses (in the case of Amber Heard, one can make allowances for suffocating anamorphic close-ups), even snakes love Mandy Lane. She’s the hottest high schooler this side of Cybill Shepherd’s Jacy Farrow in The Last Picture Show and this is the summer that Mandy blossoms. But at least one boy doesn’t love Mandy. Harvey Weinstein swallowed up the rights to the teen-disemboweler spoof after its noisy premiere at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival only to stick it on a shelf for 7 years. Director Jonathan Levine’s (The Wackness, Warm Bodies) debut film is at times too clever for its own good. Sharp observers should get wise to the film’s twist ending the moment the first body hits the ground, but fans of quality kills have much to celebrate in the sleek horizontal movement of a razor-sharp knife taking out two eyeballs at once.
