Bread and Roses

Special pleading on behalf of nonunion janitors, mostly immigrant, in a downtown L.A. high-rise. British filmmaker Ken Loach has lost a little complexity, a little reality, in his move to a new neighborhood: Eisensteinian caricatures of bosses and fat cats; a meet-cute and "sweet" romance between the Anglo activist and an illegal alien; blatant heart-tugging and drum-beating. The disrupted party for Hollywood agents, attorneys, and "stars" features cameos of such lusterless celebs as William Atherton, Samuel West, Tim Roth, and Ron Perlman. With Pilar Padilla, Adrien Brody, Elpidia Carrillo, George Lopez. 2001.
