Ruby in Paradise

Small-bore independent film, underfunded, grainy, timidly acted, about a Tennessee refugee (Ashley Judd, an American Julie Delpy, young, fresh, inexpressive) who lights in Florida to begin her adult life, and to pen a voice-over daily diary in order to make up for the shortcomings of the actress: "So far, fun has been nothing but work," etc. The bleak coastal town in off-season would be interesting to look at if it were better photographed. And one of the two romantic interests, a gloomy book-reading movie-shunning omelette-making trombone-playing intellectual, is interesting enough to deserve a bigger part. Todd Field, Bentley Mitchum, Dorothy Lyman; written and directed by Victor Nunez. 1993.
