Once Around

Family life (including three weddings and one baptism), with a high degree of wackiness. Into the fold, via the recently jilted elder daughter, comes a glad-handing, dirty-mouthing salesman, with no levelling-off of wackiness. There are some acute moments of awkwardness around tossing a loose screw into a tight family, and Richard Dreyfuss doesn't tone down any of the brass. Most embarrassing scene, in a good sense: the escalating struggle for control of the microphone at a somber family gathering. Most embarrassing scene in a bad sense: the very next one, when 8mm home movies are projected onto a nine-months pregnant stomach. Holly Hunter gamely tries a Boston accent, but has better fortune in silence. With Danny Aiello, Gena Rowlands, and Laura San Giacomo; directed by Lasse Hallstrom. 1991.
