The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity
Chad's the star of professional wrestling, but not the star of Kristoffer Diaz's sly, splashy take on the sport. Like Hulk Hogan, Chad can't wrestle a lick. He needs Macedonio "Mace" Guerra to make him look good, even though Mace is the real artist. The playwright examines a phenomenon ("Monday Night Raw" trends worldwide) where "business" rules over morality, ethics, and especially race and class. Whatever incites whopping audience reactions is what works. Ion Theatre somehow replicates the out-sized dimensions of the sport and gets Diaz's "serious-minded comedy" just right. Excellent performance by Stephen Lone as Mace, the "charisma-challenged wrestler."
