POETiCAL: Not to be Played on the Radio
For seven years, Calvin Manson interviewed people unused to tape recorders and probing questions: the homeless, the bullied, the racially profiled. Poetical is a Spoken Word, choreo-poem based on his research. It asks: "If a homeless man falls off an overpass, and there are people around, will they make a sound?" The overall quality of the poems (especially "The Word," "Happy Headed Hoes," and "I Read a Man Today") is so striking that the weaker ones stand out (and could be cut). Opening night was also uneven. Some cast members had trouble releasing themselves through the poetry. Two that did: Janice Edwards and Vimel Sephus incorporate physical gestures, speech rhythms, and inflections to share "real" subjects with the audience.
Worth a try.
