Garrett Harris 2:03 p.m., May 24
Young Pecola's never known a semblance of love. And because she's African-American and not a blue-eyed movie star, she's convinced she'll be ugly until her eyes change color. In Moxie/Mo`olelo Performing Arts often funny and deeply moving production, Pecola spirals downward as the play, based on Toni Morrison's first novel, takes an unflinching look at racism, the curse of a dominant culture, and child abuse. Gifted director Delicia Turner Sonnenberg creates a tone at once buoyant, on the surface, and solemn as a stone beneath. The entire supporting cast does exemplary work. And Cashae Monya spellbinds wall-to-wall as the heatbreaking Pecola.
