A Christmas Carol
Jonathan McMurtry playing Ebenezer Scrooge has become a holiday tradition in itself. I've seen several, and his current version at North Coast Rep ranks among my favorites. Scrooge begins as a withdrawn curmudgeon. He doesn't bark his "bah, humbugs" in pseudo-comic fashion; he utters them like curses cased in steel. In Jacqueline Goldfinger's 90-minute script, his words haunt him almost more than his three spectral visitors. And when Scrooge returns to life, McMurtry works a wonder: he becomes the happiest child on earth. The production has loose spots (especially unmotivated movement), and the Cratchitts' costumes aren't distressed enough. On the plus side, Von Schauer shines in several roles (doomed Jacob Marley, in particular), as does Alexis Rae Tenney as Tiny Tim, and Chris Luessmann's sounds, from street noises and bells to creepy vocal warpings, are first-rate.
Worth a try.
