Clay Expressions: Reception
Sophie’s Kensington Gallery presents Clay Expressions, the 7th Annual Student Showcase featuring the Hoover High School Ceramic Department.
St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center and Sophie’s Kensington Gallery along with Autism Research Institute are proud partners of Hoover High, offering their students a chance to exhibit their works of art in a community setting. Students were assigned to create cultural masks after lessons on culture, identity, ceramic skills, and the history of mask making. Students independently researched a culture they found of interest and made drawings before starting the clay mask. The process of making their tribal masks involved adding many attachments of clay to layer the mask with slab or pinch pots. The finished masks are an exploration of identity as Mayan, Native American, Buddha, and Aztec are some of the cultures represented by the students.
